NWR -HELPNEW CAT WITH COEXISTING CAT!HELP!

I adopted Tiffiany thru my friend who has too many animals to care for, I have had my cat a russian blue who is 9 years old and know I have Tiffiany (6years old) since Monday 8-27-02. Tiffinay has been hissing at my kitty who just wants to be friends, I only let them be together when I am here otherwise Tiffiany is being kept in my room . Before she hissed at me when I yelled at her No and tapped her on her nose, I did not hurt her, just enough to let her know I am watching her and what she did was wrong. HELP!!! I will not let my cat be put in any harm ,and called the vet and they suggested a water bottle, to squirt at her when she does this. I want these 2 cats to be able to get along. HELP!!! Do u think they will get along and it is just a matter of then working it out? P.S. Tiffiany is usually a sweet heart when she is around people.

I dont know anything about cats, but i had a dog for about a year and 3 months and then i brought another dog into the house, and the first month was a nigtmare i didnt think they would EVER get along, but eventually they did and now they are so cute togetehr, my little one cries if he cant be near his sister!!! they are a big weight difference though, my big one is 60lbs and my little one is about 10lbs so i always have them separated when i leave the house because the big one can play rough sometimes..dont worry, im sure this is just an adjusting period.. try not to pay too much attention to the little one, thats what i was told, ITS HARD but it helps in the long run...justuntil they are used to each other so your older one doesnt feel bad

Sorry to barge in but I just went through a similar experience - again. Do NOTHING different from your normal routine. DO NOT discipline the cat. It will take at least a week (usually two) for them to get used to each other. You must give your first cat lots of hugs and kisses. Do the same with the new cat but always give the original some love after it has seen you give effection to the new cat. It time they will be doing everything together. If they fight leave them alone - this is natural. We (DH and I) have raised cats for years. I firmly disagree with the vet. Do not spray with a water bottle. Just let them get used to each other. It's normal for them to get a little mad at you right now. In time they will be sleeping with the heads toghter.

I agree, we at one point had 5 cats of which 2 did not get along. After a while of them fighting (not badly) with each other they finally learned to live with each other. The same thing happened with one of the cats and our dog. When we got our dog one of the male cats decided he did not like her and refused to come downstairs. Finally 3 years later when our dog learned how to come upstairs he came down. Now they get along and sleep by each other. Good luck!!

I had the same problem. I PROMISE they will get used to each other! Give it time. My first cat sat in the closet for a week and then beat up on the new one in the middle of the night. She used to get herself into the cabinet under the sink and jump out on the little one when she went for water....And now, years later, they groom each other an sleep in one bed. HOwever, every now and then there is still a brawl!!! Just pay special attention to the first one when you can. Good luck!

I think it will just take time. My parents had an older cat, and got a kitten, which he is now 3 years old. But they faught a lot, but in a matter of time, they got along. The little one always follows the older one.The older one just doesnt want to be bothered. They swap paws every now and then, but it will take time for them getting used to one another, and the kitten to get used to his new environment.
Good Luck!!! Kepp us informed

When I got a new kitten when my other cat was already two years old I tried my own little techinique. I don't know if anyone else has tried this but what I did was I got a cat brush and I would brush one with it and then I would brush another with it. What this did was get the fur of one cat onto the other so they would get used to the others scent. My cats were bathing each other two days later.

Thank you all for your advice, I am trying to let them come to terms with the new living arrangements, yestaerday my russian blue was like too bad I have had it and walked in front of new cat and sat at the window, and she hissed and meowed, regular cat meowed back. This morning I left the bedroom door open, I will only let them socialize when I can supervise them... and they just stared at each other. I hope it works out.
