hey girls- home from vacay in florida...and i have to say after the wedding fh and i are seriously considering moving down there...the cost of livingis so much more affordable there that you could actually have a life...it's like on li you work to just pay bills...there u could save, maybe have a boat, travel a little more, etc...i never thought i could survive summers in fla but we met sooo many transplants from ny this weekend that said really july and august are the worst but not any worse then up here...plus everywhere has a/c...its sort of true...we could live in a 3br 2.5 ba condo on the intercoastal for 300,000...as one lindenhurst transplant put it i live my vacation everyday

Re: NWR home and seriously considering...
FH brother lives FL. He has a one bedroom apartment, living room, dinning room, kitchen, and laundry room, plus pool and that stuff, with all utilities besides cable and he pays $800. It so much cheaper the same thing is over double here. FH brother been down there a year and after a while he says you get used to the heat. You just have to remember that you might be making less in your field.

i'm a physician assistant and from what i've seen its pretty comparable...im keeping my eyes peeled for neurosurgery positions in palmbeach county...fh went to school to be a social studies teacher but never got a job, worked in insurance doing high end replacement inspections on homes, now currently is office and sales manager for his brother in laws flooring and carpeting company....he also has worked on the side doing every job from bussing to managing to cooking in restaurants...his dream would be to open a small plate restaurant...so he could really do a lot also

I sometimes think about the same things.. cost of living is so much cheaper in other places but you have to make sure you secure yourself a good job. Sometimes you will end up making less and it willk be the same as if your here in NYC.
I lived in Fl for 1 year frm 20-21 yrs old and the heat did drive me crazy sometimes and the damn storms in the summer. I also missed spring and fall but after the winters we've been having and how much Im hating winter more and more every yr I wouldnt mind living some plc warm again.

yea snow days were fun as a kid...off from school, going sledding, making snowmen, etc...now bc i work in a hospital there is no such thing as a snow day and its annoying to shovel...i love crisp fall/spring air, but even this week in fla, the nights were sometimes cool and crisp and the days were fantastic...beach weather in nov

I'm an Emergency Medicine resident and ALOT of our graduates go down to Fl after residency....its completely a thought, but their malpractice is insane. Plus, if your sued three times (even if you win all the cases), you loose your degree...
If they change some laws around, its a thought LOL

Youre not the only one! While we arent moving to FL, we are moving off of Long Island. FH went back to school, and has about 2 years left, so once he graduates and sends out the applications, whenever he gets a job is where we are going. We cant afford to live the life we want to if we stay on long island. Luckily my parents (brother and sister as well) will be moving to whenever we choose so we will still have some family where we go. Its sad that we have to go, but its an unfortunate reality for most young people these days

I'm with ya!! FH and I def don't want to stay here, it's just tough bc all of my brothers and sisters moved away (my parents are still here) and FH is an only child. I would love to finish school, get married, and move down south

yea my dad is retiring in a few years and has pretty much said he's going wherever i'm going with FH (i'm an only child)...i just feel like i can't live the kind of life i want to live here...i don't wanna work just to barely make ends meet and just pay the bills...i want to HAVE A LIFE...
and fyi...one of the doctors told me today while i was having this convo with him that the principal of syosset makes 520,000/year...i find that appalling...we can't keep enough teachers employed but meanwhile we can afford salaries like that..?? especially in nassau county as they are going bankrupt and continue to raise taxes??? i mean ***? plus think of all those old school employees on pensions...i just don't understand it... (sorry RANT)

Agreed 110%! So many of my friends have already left, and the ones that are here are planning on leaving in the next couple of years. Everyone says the same thing, you can get SO much more everywhere else for less than half the price in ny. And yes, paywise youll make a bit less but it doesnt even come close to NY's bill to income ratios.
