Does anyone know of any websites where you are able to search by style of home?
MLSLI and Listing Book doesn't have this as an option, and we'd really like to narrow down our search more and it's getting frustrating.
TIA!

Re: NWR: Home Search Websites
actually listing book does do this for you. If you go into Homefinder, then click on 'home finder criteria,' edit criteria, and then scroll down, there's a section that says 'property style'

Re: NWR: Home Search Websites
FH and I lived on listing book for a year! I actually still go on it (even though we're in contract) just because I actually can't control myself and *almost* miss looking for a house.

Re: NWR: Home Search Websites
We saw tons we like. The problem was we couldn't afford what we liked!
Seously, we house shopped for a solid year - no exaggeration. We started shopping BEFORE we even thought about a wedding.
We started looking in Smithtown/Kings Park, then Huntington/Melville, then Oakdale/Sayville, then West Islip and ended up focusing in East Islip where we eventually bought.
Along the way there were lots of stuff we had on our dream list that we gave up and some stuff we didn't know we wanted but decided after seeing so many houses, we needed to have.

Re: NWR: Home Search Websites
I think our main problem is that the both of us our so completely spoiled. We both come from immaculately clean homes, mine has a modern kitchen, both have all the criteria on our 'wish list', and both in highly desirable neighborhoods...so that's where we come from, and of course want the same for ourselves. And feasibly, it just isn't working. Anything that's affordable in both our neighborhoods is a disaster, and needs like 100k min rennovations! And they're not even priced cheap for being like that either...it's so frustrating! I can easily see ourselves searching for a year or more, or saying eff it and just getting land and building a house haha.

Re: NWR: Home Search Websites
It was really hard to look at houses and realize that they're not going to be 100% what you want them to be when you move in.
FH and I had a relatively high budget for a first time home on LI and still the house we're buying needs work. It's completely livable but cosmetically it's not really to our liking.

Re: NWR: Home Search Websites
try trulia.com ... love that site...
but if something seems too good to be true, it prob is... look on redfin.com to find out if the house is a foreclosure or short sale

It's hard and both fh and I came from similar homes as you described growing up in but you have to think...did your own parents start out in these houses or was it something they too had to 'create' out of a mess. We're young...we have lots of time to make our dream home out of a wreck of a house! I'd rather get a wreck that I can make mine instead of a newer house in a style I didn't like but would have to live with because of budget limitations, you know?

ITA...in FH's case, his parents lived in an apartment for 5 or 6 years before they got their house, but FH's grandfather was a builder so they built the home to their specs. My house was a disaster, and it took my parents 22 years to really get it to where it is today...we're not opposed to putting work in to it, it's just frustrating because the areas we're looking at even the bombs are high priced, so we couldn't afford to put that work in, or the layouts and bones of the houses just don't work for us either. Moral of the story, we need to win the lotto lol.
