NWR: Hotel Rooms and Deposits

can a hotel take a deposit on a room at booking and then not have a guaranteed room on date of arrival? isn't that the point of leaving a deposit? is there any local laws about this?

I have no idea but can you dispute it with CC company?

As far as I know there are not fed regs or state laws on this...however when it happened to me the hotel gave me my money back and actutally helped me find a room at another hotel.

FH booked a room through Hotels.com for his brothers bach party and it turned out they overbooked the hotel and didn't have a room for them. That being said Hotels.com actually called him the night before to let him know, found him another (nicer) hotel for the same price he was paying for the other one even though the new one was more expensive and gave him a $100 voucher to be used at hotels.com within the year. I believe he even paid in full when he booked but I could be wrong.
