Re: NWR: How Come Google Doesn't Have Everything?
I think a site has to register with Google to be able to pop up on a search.
I searched for months for BM jewelry for the girls and always got the same search results- until one day when something brand new popped up. When I contacted the woman who designs the jewelry (I found the perfect necklace on her site) she told me that she had just signed up with google a few days before.

I guess what I'm trying to look up is a bit complicated... short version of a long story...
My grandfather was a volunteer fireman. When he was chief he died in the line. No one in my family likes to talk about it and this happened almost exactly a year before I was born. It was a big time fire and I was hoping there would be something about it...

Typically you won't find info like that online so long after it happened - especially if it wasn't an event where many, many people died and if it occurred before the Internet really exploded in the 90s. Google indexes the Internet periodically, but in order to be indexed 1) a website needs to be currently active or 'live' 2) the content that you're looking for has to actually be on the webpage at the moment it was indexed. Since Google does its indexing at regular intervals, sites & pages will appear & disappear every few weeks depending on if they're still live or if the content is still there when re-indexed.
Anyways, that doesn't help you too much I guess. I would HIGHLY recommend visiting your local library & speaking with a librarian. Perhaps they can set you up on one of those old microfilm machines & you can check out the local newspaper archives for the few weeks around when he passed away. You might be able to find a newspaper article with what you're looking for that way. They may also be able to recommend some sort of alternate sources for you to check out for info as well...Good luck with your search!

What newspaper would it have been in...Newsday, Daily News, etc?
Did you try searching for newspaper name and the word 'archive'?
Or go to the newspaper's website and look around for archived issues.

Re: NWR: How Come Google Doesn't Have Everything?
When stories mention fire or police personnel who've died, they frequently will use either the full name or include the middle initial, i.e.:
Michael J. Brown or Michael James Brown
If you're using GOOGLE ADVANCED SEARCH you can type both possibilities in the 'Exact phrase' box. If you're using 'Michael Brown' and the article didn't happen to refer to him that way it wont come up as a hit.
HTH and let us know if you need more help!!

Re: NWR: How Come Google Doesn't Have Everything?
I'm not sure what newspaper it would have been in and I'm wondering if it was covered, back then media wasn't what it is now...
His name Is Robert Reed Jr. He was a chief in East Meadow Fire Department, he died in the line at what I think was a mutual aid to a Uniondale warehouse fire. My great grandma (his mother-in-law) died the same day or the day before him when her house burned down in Northport(I think). All I know is that my Grandpa died January 26, 1981 and my Grammy didn't go to her mother's funeral cause she was at her husband's....
We're a tragic family, lol.... my sister who I lived with (and she has 4 kids) our house burned down 3 years ago and our tennant (who accidentally started the fire) died beacuse of it.
I'm usually not a depressing person!!!
I guess I'm just looking for some answers. If I can't find it on the internet or the library, I think I can call this lady from EMFD that set me up with the hall there for my daughter's first birthday party. Her husband was chief with my Grandpa.
Thanks for the help everyone!!!!!!!!!! If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.... I think I'll try the library this week!!!
