NWR: Huntington School District?

I currently live in NJ (but I'm originally from Patchogue) and we're looking to buy a house on LI soon.
We like Huntington, but have heard some bad things about the school district. Does anyone have any info/opinions, either as a teacher or a parent with kids in the school??

Thanks!!

We are thinking of moving in that area as well and I'm kindof iffy on the school district as well. My FH groomsmen lives in Huntington and says that it is fine but I guess he's bias.

Depends what school you are talking about. The town of Huntington has a couple of districts under it. You referring to South Huntington, Huntington, even Harborfields catches some on the area.

FM me if you want info. They districts are not horrible. Some better than others. They are larger schools but have a lot of programs under them to get students involved in.

I'm recovering from eye surgery so I may not be on as much the next couple of days but I will try to help!

Depends on what part of Huntington. Personally, I'd stay away from Huntington Station or South Huntington.

Depends on which school district you fall into. As one of the previous posts said there are a couple school districts that fall into the town of Huntington. To be honest some of them have better reputations than others, but in general I would stay away from the Huntington area unless you know specifically the school your kids would be going to. It is a great town, but there are better districts on long island.

I agree that it depends on what district your kids will go to. Harborfields is a great distric that takes in parts of Huntington. I can't remember the other district that is good in that area. If you find out what district you will be, post it!

Hi, I grew up in Melville which is a part of Huntington and went to schools in the South Huntington School district which includes: Countrywood, Birchwood, Oakwood, Maplewood, Silas Wood, Stimson Middle School and Walt Whitman High School. The district is good, however, there are students in the district from certain parts of Huntington Station that isnt so great. I think over the years the population is not as great as it was when I went to school but it still is good. My mom is a first grade teacher in the district so she always sees the new generations of kids coming in and she doesnt ever really have anything bad to say. Dix Hills is right next door where Half Hollow Hills and Harborfields, etc are.

I think, respectfully, I have to disagree with some on the info given in previous posts and clarify.

South Huntington School district in reality has an excellent reputation and education, as well as Harborfields and Half Hallow

It is Huntington School district, not South Huntington, that is occasionally known for problems with thier quality of education. People often confuse this b/c the more 'affluent' areas like Huntington Village and Huntington Bay are in fact part of Huntington School district. People think this automatically means the schools connected to the areas must be the better ones...but its not the case. South Huntington is best known for its quality education as I said earlier.

Thanks everyone for the honest feedback! The house we're looking at is in the village, which is in Huntingtin S.D. (#3, if that means anything??)

I heard the same thing and I'm glad that you clarified it... Are you familiar with the area?

I spent many years in Huntington so I have a pretty good grasp of the school districts.

You have South Huntington School district which consists of mostly middle class suburban areas. (South of Jericho Turnpike...South Huntington, Melville, bordorline Dix Hills area)

Then theres Huntington School district which is a paradox of itself....you have lower income families from Huntington around the train station area who attend the school, as well as upper middle class families from Huntington Village, Huntington Bay, etc attending.

Unfortunately and sadly, Huntington SD lacks proper funds and quality education it should, so many families from the upper middle class sector end up sending thier children to private schools.

Wow, we've got a lot to think about now!
Are the elementary schools considered okay? At least then we've got some time to figure out options.
Its funny how getting married makes you think about all this 'adult' stuff like school districts!

I personally think both elementary schools in both districts are Fine....its the middle and high school that seem to have some problems...

For what its worth Huntington in general is such a beautiful, amazing town with so much to offer...i fell in love with it....and the village area is AMAZING.... I dont think you have anything to worry about!

Re: NWR: Huntington School District?

I agree with Amor that Huntington is such a great place to live! Over the summer I basically live at Centerport and West Neck Beach, Caumset Park is beautiful and theres always plenty to do and plenty of places to eat in the village. I also agree that the Huntington school district has the worse of the two reputations but it is true that some of the low income people from near the tracks do go to the South Hunt School district as well-- but def not as much. My mom has been working in the district for 15 yrs and is very happy with it tand hinks highly of it.
