NWR: I feel bad....

NWR: I feel bad....

This is the story of my life. I ALWAYS feel bad!

So, I just tutored, as I do every week. I know the family for about 10 years. I have been tutoring the older daughter for 7 years, she is now in 10th grade and the younger daughter for 4 years, she is now in the 6th grade. Anyway, since I know the family, I have always only charged $40 an hour. I know I can get much more especially since the older girl is in Regents math classes.

The mother asked last year if she could pay me every other week for both, which I agreed to. So I usually tutor 2 hours a week, which makes me being paid for 4, but she writes a check for only $150. I never argued this because I know they have a tough situation. Their youngest son is severely autistic and non verbal. He has episodes often and takes him awhile to calm down. The mother is constantly pulling her hair out.

So, onto my story. I tutored twice in a row but the son was having an episode, so she said she'd give me a check the week after. Then the next week she had her hands full again. I understand this because it happens often and I don't mind. So, then she cancelled last week and went today. So that makes 4 weeks or $300. She only had the check written for $150 and I had to tell her she owed more. She panicked and started looking through all of her checkbooks thinking she paid me before.

So now, I feel terrible because she thinks she paid me, but I know she didn't. I think I am crazy. I feel bad that she owed me the money and didn't remember! What would you do?

Tell her to go through her stuff to be certain. It will give her some peace of mind knowing she went through everything.

That's a good idea. Her record keeping is writing all over the back of her checkbook or on random receipts in her purse though! I understand she had a lot going on. I just feel terrible that I had to ask.

I'm sorry, I would feel bad too but you have to speak up for yourself. I know you want to help them out but your time is valuable, you have to get paid for your services. Maybe if it's getting this bad you should start giving receipts so she knows how much she has paid you and maybe she should just pay you every session to avoid the confusion.

You shouldn't feel bad at all... she's the one who should feel bad for underpaying you and then not believing you when you told her about it! I'd be kinda pissed. Tell her from now on she needs to pay you every single week so she doesn't get confused again in the future about whether she's payed you or not.

I was never owed that much money but i had a similar situation with a lady i tutor for. After that i really wanted to start giving receipts with a receipt book.

i understand how you feel. its a sad situation for her...but you have your own life to pay for as well and she needs to be more mindful of that.

I teach children with autism so I understand that you feel bad for their difficult situation. However, you already charge her way less per hour than you should and she still shorts you. 4 hours x $40 = $160 not $150. So, you give her an awesome price and let her short you...you should not feel bad that you had to tell her she owed you money.
