Hey girls, sorry to ask this, but I'm a med student and I have to take a leave of absence b/c of a death in the family. My grandpa died the day of an exam, and they told me I had to take the exam or I'd need to repeat the year. They told me this an hour before the test, and I couldn't leave my grandpa's side, so now I have to stop the year and start all over again Does anyone know of a job for me to have until September? I have my BA in history and a year of med school under my belt. Help please

Can your school help you find something maybe working in a clinic or something that would be related to your field so it's not a total loss of that much time.

Thanks ladies, but the school only had stuff on campus. That pays like 7 bucks an hour and I have rent to pay. When I said I needed a job, they said 'well that's your problem'... literally... just goes along with the way they've acted throughout this whole thing

uh, I'd fight that with academic affairs.... that is totally against most school's ethics policies.
They likely would require you to prove your grandfathers illness at that time with some documentation... but that should suffice.

I know this wouldn't fly at Stony Brook. They have very clear guidelines that are followed in such circumstances...

Thanks girls, i know it sounds INSANE because it is. I told them they could have a death certificate and a letter from his doctor, whatever they wanted, but they said that they believe it happened, but the point is that i failed the test. I don't know why they would think I would pass it being that I was so upset that I couldn't even see the questions. I just filled in random bubbles on the scantron. They just don't care. My FH went to Stony brook, and you're right, this is not at all what would happen there, I go to NYCOM, so if anyone is looking to apply to that school, tell them not to. They even tried to charge me 20 grand for the half of the year I'm not allowed to complete!! I had a fit and they took the charges off, but they really are something.... They made a horrible situation into an unbearable one

im so sorry thats ridiculous NYCOM would do that wow! I didnt even think orknow schools were allowed to do that...i dont know of any openings but try craigslist.com and the nytimes.com. Maybe you can do an internship thats affiliated with your school, ones that dont pay 7.00 an hour?!

this is insanity.... sounds like they're just trying to steal an extra year's tuition.... it's the kind of stuff I've only heard happen at carribean med schools...
Why not see if you can get a job at brookhaven national lab, SBU, or some hospital in NYC (like NYU or cornell) where they do clinical trials?
At least you'll get a good CV boost....
I'd consider transferring from your school, if you can... they sound like a pile of @holes...

Yea i did a lot of research at sb for clinical trials in the past, so i'll call tomorrow to see if there's anything open. good idea tho, if there isn't then i'll try some other hospitals too... are u a med student?
I would def transfer from nycom if i had the chance, i'm gonna talk with some people at sb to see what they think. there's 2 probs though: i need to stay on LI b/c my FH is doing residency and he's not portable lol, and also cuz now i have an F on my transcript b/c we only have one exam per system so i'm kinda stuck although.... i have a good reason for the F that most people in this world would understand, apparently not NYCOM

I'm a research asst professor in neurobio at SBU (PhD, not MD).... I do drug abuse research (not clinical, sorry), and am affiliated with BNL's neuroimaging group.... hence my knowledge of clinical studies.
I believe most med school admission boards would overlook the F if given an explanation, since no one would pass under those circumstances.
Definitely search the postings at SBU/BNL on LI, and NYU/cornell in NYC..... Hopefully someone has a slot open for you.
I will admit, the funding situation is rather dire.... NIH funding has been cut for about the last 6 years. The Dem's are working on getting medical research funding back on track, so there's hope for us.... So, think of a non-research back-up plan... maybe working in a clinic in some other for-profit capacity....

I am really sorry this is happening to you, and my deepest sympathies for the loss of your grandfather. Go to a hospital and see what they have available. At least you will still be in the realm of med school and you can also make some connections that way. Look for a unit secretary position usually 12 hour shifts 3 days a week. Worth a look!
