My FH just moved into his new condo today, so I called Verizon to set up his phone service. They inform me that 3 phone numbers were listed in my FH's name & under his SSN in Wyandanch, Brooklyn & the Bronx and that they were outstanding for like $1500.......OMG, my FH has NEVER had a phone in his name, someone got a hold of his ssn and is now running up all these phone bills in my FH's name. I have no clue of how to find out who did this. I just needed to vent I just got off the phone with them and they tell me they have to put a hold on it for 30 days, so now he has to stay w/o a phone for 30 days that's just not acceptable. This is so horrible some people are just so horrible!!!!!!

OMG that is so horrible. Make sure you obtain a copy of his credit report to check for other misc. charges.

I agree...all accounts should be checked including credit cards, utility bills, bank accounts. Get a credit report from all three reporting agencies; Equifax, TRW and TransUnion...

Re: NWR: Identity Theft
That is awful. Have him check all his accounts.
Hate to bring it up but in situations like this it is usually family/friends who set up the accounts. I've gotten calls from a number of people that do not have their phone in their name. One woman I used to be friendly with had her phone in her mother's name and another had her phone in daughters name - a 2 year old!!!!!

Re: NWR: Identity Theft
I'm gonna call cable vision now to try & set up service & I'm hoping they dont give me the same story. I have a feeling it's his piece of crap father who he has never met, because one of the addresses was in wyandanch & his cousin just told me that FH's father may be living in that town. All his other family is in nassau but I'm gonna take him to SS on Friday so he can get a new number. I just cant believe that someone did this, and if it is his father I cant believe that he has the nerve 2 not have anything to do with his children but thinks he has the right to ruin his credit. Huh!!!! Some people SUCK!!!!

Re: NWR: Identity Theft
The EXACT same thing happened to my old roommate. She had three accounts opened in her name through Verizon. They said she owed $1700 and an investigation took place. The poor girl never even owned a credit card and then, all the sudden her credit was in the gutter from this whole thing. It all worked out though. And everything will work out for you and your FH. I'm sorry to hear that though.

Re: NWR: Identity Theft
I had a similar situation, also with Verizon. Also involving an account in the Bronx. I have never lived in the Bronx. Verizon was a bunch of real jerks about it and it took well over a year from the time I first found out about it to straighten everything out. They kept telling me that they had my SSN on the account but when I asked what the SSN was, they would not tell me. I'm a lawyer and I still almost gave up and just paid the bill to get rid of the problem. I finally convinced them it was not me. I even filed a police report about the identity theft. I had a fraud alert placed on my credit reports. They added a lot of security, which made it more of a pain to open new accounts (more to sign) but I am glad I did that.

Re: NWR: Identity Theft
This is really serious. If they are using his name for phone bills, who knows what else they are using his name for!
He has to contact credit bureau right away.
