NWR: is anyone going back to school? if so, for what?

Original post by drivwal

I am thinking about going back to school to get my M.S. in Library and Information Sciences. If anyone else is going back to school, what are you planning on studying?

i just graduated with my BA this past may. i want to get my masters in counseling (specifically guidance counseling) but i have heard that it is really hard getting a job in that field.

I heard the same thing, but that's why I wouldn't get a degree in guidance counseling. I have lots of early childhood credits and I thought about getting another BA in that, so that I could get into the Bd.of Ed in NYC (paid summers off!!). I'll stick to the clinical psych program, since they can teach and do counseling.

I wanted to be a guidance counselor too! But all my experience was/is in banking and business (HR) so I currently work for an insurance brokerage doing financial/benefit analysis for our clients on employee health plans and I go to NYU for my MS in HR Management and Development...personally I can't wait till its over... I am sick of getting home at 11 from the city !!!!!!!!!!! SOOOO tired especially having a demanding job, going to school, planning a wedding, and house shopping. I am halfway done with my MS and sooo cant wait! Plus it is sooo expensive it is ridiculous... I recommend only go to a masters program if you have an employer who will pay some of the bill!

I'm back in school for my 2nd MA in Mental Health Counseling. I have my BA in Psych and a MA in Forensic Psych (which is worthless)

I'll be in school for a year.

Are you getting your license for the MHC? You can consult with the Forensic Psy degree. Side money is really great, sometimes better than the 9-5!

I have the same BA and MA. I've contemplated going for my MHC or PhD, but I'm just not ready yet. Besides, I have other plans in mind right now

I'll be done with my M.A. in English in July, and I might eventually go back for a PhD in English or another MA in Theology

i'm going for an MBA now but its going to take me like years and years... i realized i can only take one class a semester w/o stressing myself out completely between my full time job, and having time to do work for the class itself.

I totally understand..... I have my Bachelor's in American Studies (what the heck can u do with this?) and I just started my Master's in elementary ed/special ed (dual program) at Touro. I started with one online class and it is so much work. I am glad i just started with one. I almost didn't.

Eventually when i am done FH and I want to move down to Austin Texas where there is a big demand for teachers and computer specialists. (FH is in IT). Didn't want to be separated for so long while planning the wedding so I have to finish things here first. I guess a NY state license won't hurt, it would be easier to transfer a full license too i would think...

I have a JD and thinking of getting an MBA. However going back for an MBA will mean taking only 1-2 classes a semester because I work full time and refuse to quit my job.

I feel like school will never end, I am working on getting my BA in Communicative Disorders. But then it's on to get my masters after that because I want to be a Speech Language Pathologist. It is definitely challenging going to school full time and working and trying to plan a wedding.

I graduated from Pratt with my Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) in May. I liked the program and found the classes interesting, but now I can't find a job! Part of this is probably the economy. However, when I started school everyone was saying how easy it would be to find a job because so many librarians were retirement age. Librarianship was listed as one of the 'Hot Jobs' at the time. Blah, blah, blah. I'm sure it will pick up, but before you go this route, consider the drawbacks. I'm thinking of getting a second masters to make me more marketable. Problem is I am drawn to a History degree, which will be about as useful as my Literature degree.

Wow, I just re-read this and it sounds like such a downer. I don't want to totally discourage you from a MLIS, I'm just down because I have a 3.9 combined Undergraduate/Graduate average and I can't find a job. I would probably be in the same situation with a different Masters anyway.

I went back to school for my MBA after I finished my undergrad, I graduated last December, it was one of the best decisions I ever made!

I am in my first semester of an M.S.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling...its a lot of work buttt its better than only having a B.A. in Psychology...which enables me to say 'Would you like fries with that?'

i just graduated in May with my Bachelors in Accounting. a million & a half people have asked if i am going back to school. i am still paying tuition so the answer is NO. FH is still in school until January so we need him to finish first.

unless someone is willing to pay for me to go to school (my parents or my boss) i am not even considering it at this time.
