NWR- Is this a cop out?

NWR- Is this a cop out?

so as many of you know I was unhappy at my Job- but all that has changed for the better
and now I want to stay here

when I sat back and thought about it the truth is-
1. it's close to my house- don't have to go into the city

2.the hours are 9 to 5pm
plus 1 hour for lunch

3. it's by the Mall, target- so it's easy to run errands

4. the people are nice- and I have a few good friends

but while I do make decent money- there is nothing to get promoted to or an opperunity to get a HUGE raise

and now I decided I don't care about that b/c Jake makes more then enough money and I really have enough to pay for my car, clothes etc

I just feel like I have changed- when I started working I wanted to be a VP and make six figures and now I am content to play second fiddle to my husband- I feel like I am letting my Mom down- b/c she always pushed me to be so driven

does any one else feel this way?

I kind of feel similarly, I have a nice job, pretty much 9-5 (give or take a bit), I'm not making a ton of money, I could be making more but, I'm living decently, and I'm happy here.

I think the key isn't being driven, it's what makes you happy! I looked into leaving at different points but, a job isnt' just about the work, it's about the whole culture and everything that goes with it.

Unfortunately, my FH doesn't make a huge amount of money but, we are living really comfortably and are happy!

My current job isn't too bad, and I get to do my masters degree for free, but same thing I know there really wouldn't be room for promotion here.

Did you get my FM from yesterday?

i feel the same way..however i guess its harder for me to accept because there ARE opportuities here - and i CAN make more money and do more travelling..

however those other positions require me coming into the office at 645 am as opposed to 730 and its alot more stressful...

however im content with my job- i get paid very well and my quality of life is good (no huge raises though)

so i know what you are saying- we start out with these lofty goals but when we get comfortable, we dont feel like going for them

anyway, im glad they took care of you. im sure your mom is very proud of you

Re: NWR- Is this a cop out?

I have the potential to make a lot of money in my position as well, but I work in Finance and the hours are long. I never wanted to become a VP, but that's mostly because I want to be a mom as well. Now that's NOT saying I couldn't do both, because so many GOOD mothers do it. I respect and admire those who can. I will have to work once we start to have children, that's not an option for us financially.

But for me, I'm starting to look at the big picture and long term. Having a job that I like, working with people I like, and having decent hours will really become my top priority in the next few years. If/when you decide to have kids, you might love the job you currently have.

Your mother's baby just got married! I'm sure she is already proud of you and wants to you be happy. So in answer to your question...No I don't think it's a cop out to be content where you are. So many people would love to be where you're at!!!

Re: NWR- Is this a cop out?

I very much understand. I was a full-blown workaholic and was crazy driven when I first started my career. I worked crazy hours and busted my butt so that I could get promotions, etc. Work was my life.

When I met my FH though my priorities changed almost instantly. All of sudden, leaving the office at a reasonable hour so that I could spend time with him was all that mattered to me. Realizing that being with him and wanting a family in the future was the most important thing to me was actually pretty hard for me to deal with for awhile. Don't get me wrong. I still have a good job that pays well and there is room for growth...but now, that's what it is...a job. I try to keep all thoughts of it between 9-5 and focus on everything else the rest of the time. Sure I want to be successful...I think I just measure what 'success' means differently now. Does that make sense?

And I know your mom would be proud. Maybe you will never make it to VP if you don't want to, but she knows you could if you wanted to! And I'm sure she would be proud of you being a supportive loving wife!!

Re: NWR- Is this a cop out?

i feel the same way... my job isn't bad- i work at a school, so you really can't beat the schedule... but being a speech therapist, theres a TON of paperwork and meetings that i have, plus coming up with activities to do with the kids all the time ( becasue they're all working on different things!) is REALLY tiring!
my mom and dad are the same way- they always pushed me to be so driven and that i had to work hard, and get to the top,etc... but i would be so content jsut working the photo lab at target or something less demanding than what i do now- i think part of it has to do with having a house now, and thats almost lke a whole other job to me ( not that DH doesn't help out- but it mostly falls on me) so it gets really stressful. i don't want to NOT work, because i think i would go crazy without kids to take care of yet, but i could definitely handle a part time less demanding job if DH made just a little more $

honey, i cannot wait for the day i can walk away from here and not look back. my fh will be making more then enough to take care of bills and i really want to be a SAHM.

we both need to work now and i was never the type to stay home and do nothjing, but once i get PG, that is it.

i see where you are coming from in that you don't want to depend on your dh for everything, but if you are satisfied where you are, i'd say stay.

i think part of it has to do with having a house now, and thats almost lke a whole other job to me ( not that DH doesn't help out- but it mostly falls on me)

I also have to basically handle the apartment by myself, laundry, dry cleaning- food shopping etc - doing things for Jake b/c he works too much to do things for himself- bank, drug store

I do have a cleaning lady every week- but I still spend hours cleaning

don't get me worng- my Job isn't cake- I do work hard and I worked hard to get to the position - I just got here very quickly- most people that I started working with a not up to my level yet- but now I am just content here

If I was to go back to work in the city- I would need about $10K more to break even- and I would be stuck commuting for over an hour each way

I just like leaving work by 5pm and getting to gym by 5:30

I guess I am just surprised b/c I finally admitted all this to myself yesterday- I was blaming it on the wedding planning- but I guess not-

thanks for listening- I am glad I figured all this out before I quit my job and got a new one

Re: NWR- Is this a cop out?

I really hear you b/c I'm going through this decision right now. This is my first year in a school & I'm kind of regretting my decision b/c I miss being able to leave work and really be 'done'. Even though the hours are pretty good, my FH doesn't get home at 4 anyways, and I miss being able to stay up till midnight with him hanging out..now it's in bed by 10, lights out soon after.
He keeps saying that my job is good for when we have kids, the vacations are good, & I'm guilty feeling b/c the time, hard work and $$ I spent on my certification..but I'm really thinking that spending time with FH and feeling truly relaxed at home may be worth the paycut..
Is it worth it having $$ if you're never around to enjoy it? I'm beginning to learn my priorities but this is still a hard decision
