Although Johnnie Cochran is best known for O.J., P. Diddy (or Puffy?) and the first M.J. molestation case, he was a civil rights lawyer. He spent over 20 years fighting to free Geronimo Pratt (a Black Panther) who was wrongfully convicted of murder because he was believe to be a violent member of the Eldridge Cleaver faction of the Panthers. Kathleen Cleaver was a visitng professor at my school and we held a panel once Mr. Pratt was granted a new trial.
Most recently Mr. Cochran was involved in a litigation re: Rosa Parks (the African American woman who refused to ride at the back of the bus) and the use of her name in a hip hop song.
I did just want to point out some of the highlights of his career that I will always remember.
