NWR: Ladies who use Pro Activ

Do you feel like your skin got somewhat worse before it got better? I've been using it for a few weeks now and I do think it's working. But, I've also noticed that I've been breaking out a little bit, although my skin is getting better. Also, my whiteheads are sooooo much easier to pop and I do feel like they have reduced significantly.

Yup, that means it's working. It draws all the stuff that's already formed and just below the surface out, and after that your skin will be peaches and cream Mine did the same exact thing.

I used this for a LOONG time!! i think yes at times it got worse before better. But my skin was usually pretty clear most of the time while on it.

I don't know how often this happens but... my eyes started to swell really bad and itch like hell and were very red. (I never put proactive near my eyes) this would happen on and off and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Right before my wedding I finally went to a dermatologist about it and he got excited at the news of my symptoms. LOL seriously. It was odd. he then goes on to explain that he has this strip test and he can tell what's bothering me from it and blah blah. Turns out I was allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide (a very active ingredient in proactive) and most likely developed it from the proactive. So now i can never use it or benxoyl peroxide again. Ha Thanks Proactive. Tons of different allergic reactions can occur in the eyes even if they have nothing to do with that area.

But it does work for a lot of people. And I'm the only one I know that this happened to.

i got the trial and it made my skin break out like crazy, i got dry patches all over... and then i googled for reviews and so many similar complaints for people, basically it is really harsh on your skin and irritates it, for some people it helps but as soon as you stop using it you break out (so you're hooked) and for others its so harsh you can't use it at all and you end up a big pimply mess like me. i just went to the dermatologist and got some prescription stuff that works great.

Just curious what rx stuff you got?

Everyone's sensitive to different things, so like anything else it works for some and not others.

I modify my ProActiv schedule and only use it Once a day alternating with twice a day because twice every day is too much for my skin, it gets too dry. As long as I use it every day, my skin stays great. I've always had really crappy skin and it works for me :)

Re: NWR: Ladies who use Pro Activ

i think it's called duac

from what i've read, proactiv is really geared towards teens and not so much adults. the reason teens get acne is because of over-production of oil and clogged pores. adult acne is totally different and should be treated as such. teen products (like proactive, clearisil, etc) clear up acne by drying up the oil. in many adults this can cause even more breakouts because the real source of acne in adults is dryness, which in turn leads to over production of oil, and thus acne (a vicious cycle when you use drying products). hope that makes sense

if it is working for you that's great, though.

I bought the trial version and ended up returning it. I know a lot of people say that it dries up their skin, but for me it was quite the opposite. It made my skin silky smooth, not oily or dry. But then I started breaking out like crazy and decided not to bother with it anymore. Now I use clean & clear which really does clear the acne but has the tendency to dry out my skin.

Re: NWR: Ladies who use Pro Activ

When I went to the dermatologist in Oct. she gave me Clindomycin and Tarozoc....(sp? not sure). Anyways, it was horrible and made my skin horrible!!!
The Pro Activ was drying my skin and actually my right eye gets irritated once in a while. I kinda figured that it may be the benzoyl peroxide. But, ever since I started using a Vitamin E lotion after putting on the repairing tx from Pro Activ it's helped a lot. I only use it at night though.
A friend of mine actually told me that she stopped using it because her skin was becoming very addictive to the ingredients in Proactiv.

But, I definitely feel like it is working especially on my whiteheads and blackheads.

Tazorac is really rough on the skin... it strips away the top layer of cells to keep them from clogging your pores. I could never tolerate those kinds of products.

The salicylic acid int he PA does something similar but in a more gentle way.

YES!!! The Tazorac was horrible on my face. I think I used it for a week and just stuffed it somewhere in my closet! I actually have an appt with my dermatologist again in a few weeks.

In general, do you think antibiotics works better?

Re: NWR: Ladies who use Pro Activ

like, oral antibiotics? Or tipocal ones like the clindamycin?

Unless you're getting like... cysts, big red pimples, I don't think the cost/benfit for the oral antibiotics is worth it. They tend to be rough on the stomach and they affect the effectiveness of BC. No thanks.

Keep up with the proactiv and see how you like it in a week or 2 more.. honestly, the active ingredients are the same as all other OTC stuff on the market (benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid) but the balancing, percentages and inactive ingredients are what make the product different and more gentle and wonderful IMHO
