Re: NWR: Lap Band
I haven't had the surgery. My mother had the gastric-bypass...but my friend's husband had the lap band surgery... He was 400 plus when he had the surgery and now he's down to like 160.... he's a too thin but it seemed to work for him. I can get the doctor's information if you would like....

Re: NWR: Lap Band
I work with a lot of dieticians who work with Gastric Bypass/Lap Band patients and there's so much more to it than just getting it done and being skinny. For the first few weeks you need to have additional protein supplementation in the form of whey protein shots and whey protein shakes, which can be very expensive. Any vitamin or medication you need to take has to be crushed.
Definitely make sure you do a TON of research.

I agree with mrsdraskin2009. There is a lot more to it and its a complete lifestyle change. I know of two close people that have had gastric by pass. One was in her 24 and one was 32, the 24 year old girl had a lot of trouble since she was not very decipline you can not over eat or you get sick you can not drink alcohol, or at least just a little wine, you are supposed to exercise and she really didnt. The 32 year old after the procedure has had so many medical problems, gallballer removed kidney stones, back trouble, ect. As im writing this i realize i may be discouraging basically i dont mean to be but i urge you to do a lot of research. Im a larger girl and i have worked very hard at going to the gym for over 9 months just to lose 50lbs it feel wonderful to work out, it is such a release, the one thing i can sya is if you are trying to lose weight dont deny yourself of food you enjoy cause then at some point you will over eat just do small portion of it. I can now have two bites of cake and be statified. Good luck with your research.

Re: NWR: Lap Band
I have a friend who does had the lap band procedure and she lost a ton of weight but she definitely did not realize how hard it was going to be. I saw her on weekends and it was hard for her not to be able to have a beer with us. Or if we went out to eat. She could barely eat anything. I know she went through a depression for a while because of it too.
On the other hand I have a co-worker who had it done 2 years ago. He lost 150lbs. He's down to a solid 200 and it gave him the energy he needed to start working out. He's a health nut now and it just seemed he needed a kick start to his energy to be able to work out because he was always tired and achy from all the extra weight.
I've also heard lots of things about people gaining back the weight because they just weren't disciplined.
As all of the other girls say, def do your research. It's minimumally invasive and supposed to be very safe. But you are STILL altering your body unnaturally.

Re: NWR: Lap Band
I do. Dr. Ahmad in Port Jeff. He works out of Mather & St. Charles. He is supposed to be the best. My mom has been seeing him because she lost over 100 lbs with L.A. Weightloss years ago & gained it all & then some back. She has struggled with her weight her whole life. I feel like she will have a heart attack if she doesn't have the surgery. I was scared at first but now I see she needs medical intervention at this point. First she was going for just the lap band but switched to the gastric bypass. She even had a surgery date shceduled but Dr. Ahmad would not operate until she had her gynecological issues with her fibroid tumors cheked out because of her anemia. I think they have to put you on blood thinners so she could have bled to death. I liked that about him that he didn't just rush to do the surery. But now she has too many other surgeries that she needs so I think she may just try the lap band first.
Anyway he did the bypass for my God Mother & the lap band for her sister & they both look amazing. I found some of his credentials from his website :)
Dr Ahmad is the author of innovative surgical techniques in the field of Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery. This includes a new technique to prevent intestinal obstruction and a technique to detect leaks. These have been published in international Journals and have been adopted by surgeons worldwide .
Dr Ahmad started and is Director of Bariatric surgery at JT Mather and St Charles Hospital, where he currently performs most of his surgeries . He is a member of American Society of Bariatric Surgery, Fellow of American College of Surgeons,Member of Society of American Gastroendoscopic Surgeons .
Dr Ahmad has been recognised as one of Americas Top Surgeons by Consumer Research Council of America in 2004-2005. Dr Ahmad conducts patient education sessions every two weeks at Mather and St Charles Hospitals in Port Jefferson. Please call 631 689 0220 if you wish to register or have other questions

Re: NWR: Lap Band
MY Fiance did it back in April. He did what was called the Sleeve Gastectomy. Its as effective as the Gastric ByPass but less evasive. They didnt have to cut him open. Since april he is already down 70 lbs. He did for the first 3 to 4 weeks have to be on lots of protein shakes and supplements but after that he was able to start introudcing small amounts of food. Its a big lifestyle change... not everyone can do it but it was somethng he felt he needed to do and so far hes dont GREAT...no issues with ANYTHING...he goes every few months to the DR. and the nutritionist and they find him in great shape. The key is to change your lifestyle. You can go back to eating junk. U need to realize that this will be hard change. It was definetely difficult for him at first and he said he 'resented' the fact he couldnt eat but NEVER regrettted what he did. But he has now (along with myself) have grown accustomed to his portions and what he cant and cant eat. It was the best thing he could have done for himself. HE more engergetic. His confidence is boosted and the best of all HES HEALTHY!!!!
P.S. He had the surgery at LENOX HILL....ill give u more info if needed.
