NWR laptop

I have a mac but it is 5 years old and no point in spending money updating. It does still work for the most part. My parents are willing to buy me a new laptop for christmas but a PC. I just do not know if i can give up my mac i love it. But if I don't take them up on this offer there is no money for a new laptop till 2014. Also I am starting grad school soon so I will def. need something. Any advice and any PC worth looking at.

EDIT: I should of added my dad gets deals from work on Dells so I am being pushed that way.

Are you able to split the difference? With the upgrades apple put on their new laptops in the past year, the lowest level macbook doesn't require any add-ons if you're using it just for school and regular use.

I broke my last macbook (wine and studying don't mix over a keyboard) and so I bought the lowest version of the new macbook and it was just as good if not better than the one it replaced.

When I thought I was getting a PC instead bc it was cheaper FH put together a Dell for me, but he had to put on a lot of add-ons to make it comparable enough.

The only one i refuse to buy is HP ... i've heard horror stories about them dying after 2 years (or less)

I went through both an HP and a Compaq within 4 years, and I lost a lot of stuff when they crashed... thats when I bought my mac and the only reason I had to replace it was because my dumbass spilt wine on it

This is why I do not know if I want to go back. My mac got me through 4 years of college. My Dell from high school crashed in 3 years. My mac software if just so old you can not download anything new.
