NWR: LI Facing Major 'Brain Drain'

So sad and so true!! If the NYPD allowed FH and I to move to NJ or PA, we totally would! So we are going to commute from East Islip to the Bronx [FH] and Astoria [me] everyday! We could only afford Suffolk County and are stretching it, moneywise, to live in a nice neighborhood with good schools!!

That article hilights the reasons I won't own a house for a VERY long time...and makes moving to Virginia sound enticing.

In the past 5 years there have been 55 and older homes built within 5 miles of where I live now...and 2 more are in construction now.

Its really sad.

it's so true -- that's exactly the reason FH and I are moving to Rochester.

It is very scary for couples starting out...ad once you get the house...you struggle. It is not easy!

very good artical and very very true! I was just looking on realtor.com yesterday at what i can get for $250,000 vs the nothing i can get here. Its disgusting! I have already told FH that im not raising my kids here if we can't live in a nice home in a good school district.

I know it is sooo TRUE! It is so bad... we bought our house together 2 years ago and the taxes have gone up every year ~ this year they increased $1k and we are in the boony's (Ridge) Well with FH getting laid off from American Home Mortgage last Friday we have been really considering our plan for the future and what will happen if we have children (+I work in Manhattan) We are considering all options ~ he has been sending his resume out from here to California ~ so who knows what will be in store for us after we are married! I guess what is meant to be is meant to be...

How sad is that? FH bought a beautiful 3 bedroom 2 bath in a nice community in Boca 5 years ago, which he had to rent out due to financial reasons and now we live in a rental...we refuse to buy up here, and even if we sell down there, we will never get anything that up here in a good district for the same price! People laugh when we tell them that we rent here and own there...you live better by renting...sad part is since I am an attorney admitted to practice solely in NY, it makes it hard to leave...we are thinking about it, and it would require me not to work while I take the Florida bar, but considering that we make over the median here, we can't afford anything...

Also, funny they don't mention the absurd cost of a higher education and the fact that many of us are up to our necks in student loans with morbidly high interest rates! Maybe they should wake up and help with that! I tell people that you are better just forgetting about law school, because I will be spending the foreseeable future paying back loans! What kind of society will NY be when young people are stuck with huge loans and mortgage companies that enjoy taking advantage of young people (they just stopped no money down mortgages)

It is sad and exactly the reason we're moving to NC next year. Sometimes we think about staying, we live in a great school district and our friends and FH's family is here. But then we look online and realize we could have this for less than $300,000. It snaps up back into reality.

Pic wont post.

It's just more evidence of why I will never be able to move back home to the Island. And the article must be talking about rural VA. Around where I live in Alexandria, you'll be lucky to buy a studio condo for $200k. Something has to give...
