usually our LIPA bill is steady btwn 120-140 bucks a month. Last month we got a very steep bill for $330 - this month the bill is only $56. I have no idea whats going on anyone else have this kind of thing happen to them ever? We use the same electricity all the time...

Re: NWR: LIPA BILLS
there are regulatory taxes and surcharges that are retroactive... they get applied to your bill randomly usually there is some fine print notice that its coming or could be coming.

Do you live in an apartment or a house? We had the same problem in our old apartment. One month it was $56, and the next it was almost $400. We got into a huge fight with LIPA over it, they ended up admitting that they only send someone out to check the apartment complexes every other month. The months they don't check they only do an estimate. The next month when they do check they bill you for your current charges, and add what they were off by the month before. I HATE LIPA!

Are you kidding that they only send someone out every other month??? My FH works for Con Edison as a meter reader and if they were to do that they would get written up!!
you should have told them since they only come to read my meter every other month then maybe I will pay my bill every other month. Thats insane!!

Re: NWR: LIPA BILLS
If I am not mistaken, doesn't it also have to do with whether it is an actual reading or an estimated reading??
I could be totally wrong but I hear my mom bish about it!
I HATE BILLS!

Re: NWR: LIPA BILLS
Over the summer with the AC, ours was $200 but usually it's $85-$115 for our house. But we have oil heat and central air.

Yup! We were told the same thing when we lived in our apt.
It was our first month in our old apartment (this was almost 3 years ago) & we were on vacation for 2 weeks out of the month & the bill was like $150. I called & they said it was an estimated reading b/c they only read the meters on the EVEN months and we were in January which is an ODD month. So i asked how they got our price & they said they based it on the previous occupants of the apt! Ridic!
ETA: With our house, it's a little more consistant but I think they still only read it every other month. Check your bill on the back. It will say ESTIMATED READING or ACTUAL READING...something like that.

I think its all based on estimates...and then when they do an actual reading they credit you for the extra $$ they charged
