NWR - LIRR help!

NWR - LIRR help!

I'm from Brooklyn and totally clueless:

My mom and I have tickets for tonight's Mets game, but we know parking is a nightmare at Shea. My mom has an issue with subways and won't ride them, so we can't take the #7 train. I know the LIRR goes to Shea Stadium. We'd need to drive to a station and park there, and take the train in. What station? Great Neck? And do you have to be a resident of the town to park in the lots?

TIA and Let's Go Mets!!!

(Edited to remove misinformation so no one gets confused. Sorry for the mistake!)

Let me get the schedules for you and give you the times. (I'm a commuter - I'm used to this, and I just took the LIRR to Shea last night)

FWIW - Driving was NOT NOT NOT bad at all last night. My parents drove in from West Hempstead and the traffic was not bad at all. We got out of the parking lot in no time, too... but it cost $20 to park!

At night, you can park in the lots and not be a resident. You can go to any of the stations on the Port Washington Line ( for example Great Neck, Manhasset, Plandome, Port Washington). I have taken the train from Manhasset to Shea before and it went well.

The only bad thing is that the trains done run continuously - like the subways do - so you might have to wait awhile at the end of the game.

Okay, it appears I was thinking backwards in my first post, so I deleted the misinformation. Here is the train schedule info for Shea Stadium tonight you if you need it:

You want to go to this link:

http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr/html/ttn/SheaStadium.htm

Then click on 'To NY City Weekdays' Under the second option, which is playoff games starting at 8pm.

HTH.

ETF link.

The train to Shea Stadium ONLY stops at Woodside and Penn Station as far as I know.

You have to look up the schedule for Shea stadium and time it so that you get to either Woodside or Penn Station before the Shea Stadium train arrives.

That's if you are travelling from Penn Station east, westbound towards Shea, you can take it from Douglaston, Little Neck, Great Neck, Manhasset, Plandome and Port Washington (as you can tell, I have spent a lot of time in Penn Station waiting for trains!)

Thanks for all the info. You guys are fast! One more question - we're coming from Brooklyn. I just kind of randomly picked the Great Neck station. Is that the best one (most parking)? Or should we go to LIttle Neck, Douglaston, or another?

I'm not sure about parking at Little Neck or Douglaston... I know Great Neck and Manhasset have good sized lots.

Re: NWR - LIRR help!

Oh, I wanted to add -- If you are sitting in the upper deck and/or on the left field side of the stadium, you are way better off driving than taking the LIRR.

It will take you so long to get all the way down after the game (or all the way to the trains from the left field side of the stadium) that you'll wind up missing the first few trains and waiting around for a while.

We unfortunately sat in the upper deck last night and it took forever to get down! We were on the rightfield side, too, and if we had to take the train home, it would have been hairy!

My parents drove in, so FH and I took the train from work to Shea and then they drove us home (we only live 15 mins from them). They didn't have any problems -- and getting out of the lot was not bad at all. They had cops directing traffic who were really on the ball. Also, they didn't have any problems getting there. Traffic was moving well. I don't know if traffic will be a little worse tonight b/c it's Friday and people are going away for the weekend... but they didn't have any troubles.

Just make sure you leave early, though, if you do drive - so you can park near the exit. :) They parked in the field right near the train platform if that helps.

Also, if you're driving from Brooklyn to Little Neck or Great Neck or out to LI, you might as well drive to Shea. The trains are convenient, but depending on where you are sitting, getting home can take a long time!!

Oy, after all that, I just spoke to my mom and she agreed (after what I told her Kara and Todd had said) that we would drive. Thanks for all the help and advice along the way, though!
