I haven't, because I don't have enough hair. I would love to though. I believe they need 10 inches or more....

I found this....

GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTABLE DONATIONS
Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist. We are not able to accept bleached hair due to a chemical reaction that occurs during the manufacturing process.
Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable because it is not bundled in a ponytail or braid.
Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable. If shaving your head, first divide hair into multiple ponytails to cut off.
We cannot accept dreadlocks. Our manufacturer is not able to use them in our children’s hairpieces. We also cannot accept wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair.
Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches.
Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails.
Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.
10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.

yea I checked the guidelines and I'm pretty sure my hair qualifies but I thought I can get a free haircut out of it but I don't see any participating salons on the locks of love website. I could have sworn people who have done this told me their haircuts were free.

It was free, but thats because my cousin cut it for me. Sorry can't help. But i do remember reading somewhere that salons that participate in locks of love normally give free haircuts.

I donated 9 inches a couple of years ago and a few inches this week! It's a great feeling, most salons that are affiliated take care of everything, they zip it up right there and send it to them.

I think Maximus gives you a freecut as long as you donate your hair. You should call & find out.
I also want to do this but I need to grow about 2 more inches.

My sister does it whenever her hair gets long. She does not get a free haircut tho.

I have done it a few years ago but my hair didn't get cut for free. I believe I heard something like Ulta might do it for free. I would do some research online. Good luck! I just donated to Pantene's beautiful lengths and they will take 8 inches.

thanks for all the info, I found a salon in the city that will do it for free if i donate it to pantene. If anyone is interested the name of the salon is mark garrison salon. Daniela - if you do pantene they'll take 8 in., not 10. Helen - I think I read on the pantene website that they'll work with whatever they get

I'd say the better of the hair donation organizations is Pantene's Beautiful Lengths, because at least the women in need actually receive their wigs. Locks of Love has been in business over 10 years and has only produced 2000 wigs and they don't go to children with cancer, as the media hypes up. Most hair gets thrown out.

NY Times article re: Locks of Love donations getting thrown out

At the headquarters of Locks of Love in Lake Worth, Fla., the hair deluge — up to 2,000 individual donations a week — can be daunting for the small staff of six employees and 10 to 15 volunteers.

“We created this monster because people get so much from it,” said Madonna Coffman, the president of Locks of Love. “They get the attention. They get a warm and fuzzy feeling. They feel they’re going to help a child.”

Locks of Love sends the best of the hair it receives to a wig manufacturer, Taylormade Hair Replacement in Millbrae, Calif., which weeds through the selection still further, rejecting up to half.

“We hate throwing it away but ultimately we have to clear the place out,” said Greg Taylor, the president and owner of Taylormade. “There is a disparity between the hundreds and hundreds of braids and ponytails and the number of hairpieces we’ve produced.”

Mr. Taylor sells the wigs wholesale to Locks of Love for less than $1,000. Since the charity began in December 1997, it has provided about 2,000 wigs to recipients for free or a reduced price. The group makes clear in its literature and on its Web site that most of the wig recipients are not children with cancer. Rather, they are children who suffer from alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that destroys follicles and results in hair loss. About 2 percent of the population, including half a million children, are estimated to have alopecia.

In fact, all three of the children’s charities sell excess hair — in particular, the short and the gray — to commercial wig makers to defray costs. According to its tax returns, Locks of Love made $1.9 million from hair sales from 2001 to 2006, and took in another $3.4 million in donations. Besides paying for wigs, the money goes for overhead and other costs, including grants for alopecia research.

Perhaps they would be less adamant if they could visit Ms. Coffman in the Locks of Love office in Florida. Every day the hanks of hair arrive, filling some 10 postal bins, representing the best intentions of donors, but so much of it destined for the trash.

“A check would be easier for me,” Ms. Coffman said. “But would the donors get out of it what they do? No.”

Re: NWR: locks of love

I donated 12' to Locks of Love. I don't even know if they'll accept my hair but it's worth trying. I tried looking for a participating salon but couldn't find any. So the morning before our HM flight I had DH cut it for me. umm.. the left side was longer than the right but thank god it didn't show in the HM photos.
Good luck and let me know if you find a place that'll give you a free cut because I'm doing this again in 2 years..

I wanted to do this but I couldn't because I have highlights but I just donated my step-daughter's hair on Tuesday. If you go to the website they give you all of the info and the guidelines.
