NWR: Long Island Teacher Salary

Hi girls,

I am a N.YC. teacher and I work in Staten Island. I have always heard that teachers on Long Island make much better money. I am not trying to be intrusive and ask anyone to tell me their salary, but would someone mind telling me if this is true and where I can go to view the salary scale. Me and my FH are house hunting and considering moving out to Long Island and this is something that could def. be incentive. Thanks so much!!!

I hate to say this but FH is a Phys Ed teacher and he is not rolling in the Benjamin’s by any means (despite my Bling ring) This is a very helpful tool:

Go to salary and put your zip in. I find it's pretty much right on.

i think LI teachers did make more until NYC renegotiated their contract a few years ago. now i think we're almost even. my chair has said that starting salary isn't that different, but the progression with credits/experience pays a lot better out here.

try as i might, i have never been able to get my hands on a salary schedule (with the obvious exception of my own).

starting salary this year in my district (which is not no so high on LI)

Bachelors --$46,877
Masters -- $55,300

I know there are districts that pay much higher. I have been offered a position at another district and they are willing to pay me $25,000 more than I currently make.

That's the key... pay increments... my district only goes to MA+60... I started on the dead bottom at $42

I know someone who teaches in the Hood of the city. Not sure what school. She just told me she was the only white teacher last year & has been there for 10 years or so.

She wants a job on LI also...but cant find anyone to meet her salary.

I started out in the city about 13 years ago and was there for 3 years. When I accepted a part-time position out here (3/5) I figured out that my salary as a 4/5 teacher would be the same as working FT in the city...yes I am a math teacher
I don't know if things have changed since then bec. my friends that still work in the city said their raises are not really raises bec. they have to put in more hours (?).
Starting salary in my district at Step 1, BA is 49; w/Masters, 56.

My District pays about $55,000 for a masters....But I've heard that it is very tough to get a teaching position on LI.

i made a little more than that my first year on LI with a Masters and 1 year epxeirence.

there is NO where for you to find the salary codes as faar as I know. there are 120 school districts on LI all with different contracts and different salary scales. many are not published and only printed in the teacher's contract.

also, there are tons of different factors that affect your salary- your years of experience and credits post Masters. many districts reqward those credits differently where in the city it's standadrd.

i teach LI... i am going in on step 5. my husband is in the city, only year 2 with about the same number of credits and i am making almost $20,000 more than he is. however, once you're there long enough, the salaries start to even out.

Depending on how much education you have I think my district starts out at 45k

I am entering my 4th year with masters in NYC.
FH is starting out on LI with masters, until I finish my +30, he will make $4K more than me.

Plus, we top out at Masters +30 in NYC, on LI, you can go to masters +90.

Which is why I am getting my AP license soon.

not all districts go up to +90, in fact most don't. Most cap at +60, even fewer have a +75.
