My wonderful little man Mickey had to be put down early Friday morning. Nearly 2 weeks ago he suffered a debilitating seizure and experienced temporary paralysis. He made just about a full recovery until he woke up around 3am Friday morning with another seizure. This time he was tragically seizing and projectile vomiting blood. We rushed him to the emergency room and while his vitals were OK he was pale and weak. We made the extremely tough decision to put him down. 2 severe seizures in 2 weeks and internal bleeding. I am having some regrets that we didn't do further testing before putting him down but I just couldn't see him suffer and couldn't imagine him bleeding out in pain especially alone while we are at work. So my little boy (old man rather) passed away early Friday morning with his family holding him and comforting him as he passed. We all stayed in the room to ensure we held him to comfort him and let him how much he is loved and that he was not alone. I am so broken hearted and just completely devastated. He lived an amazing life and brought so much joy to us in his 16 years of life. He was there for us for many milestones and we have had him since I was 9. We have had him since he was 2 months old and he was treated like a true Prince. We hope we made the best choice. We are having him cremated tomorrow. I am looking forward to him being placed in his urn and back home where he belongs. This is so devastating for us all. He was truly my baby and meant the world to me.Please pray for him.
Anyone else ever put their beloved pet down that can offer some tips to help us cope?

I lost the dog I grew up with a few years ago. It was super hard. You just have to keep telling yourself you made the right decision because you didn't want your pet to suffer anymore. It's hard, and you are going to go through those normal cycles of mourning. Our house seemed really empty for awhile, and it took a few months for it to feel normal going home and not having her there. But, you eventually get use to it. It's hard, and I'm sorry for your loss, it'll take time to heal, but you'll make it through.

I'm so sorry. I grew up with 27 cats, and 5 dogs so I've been through this too many times. It's always hard but in the end it's the best choice. It's worst to see them suffer and you don't want them to experience the end that way.

I have to say, this brought me to tears. We had to put down my 15 1/2-year old dog two years ago because he had a particularly bad seizure in spite of being on seizure meds (he had been on them for a few months and was doing okay up until then). I was there to hold him for his last moments and I know how difficult it is. You did the right thing for Mickey. Seizures and internal bleeding are serious, and any kind of treatment is risky for a 16-year old dog or cat. Be at peace knowing he isn't in pain anymore and that he lived a happy life while he was here. I promise the pain will fade and it gets easier!

I'm so sorry for your loss. My FH father is a dog trainer and they had many dogs and there is nothing that makes it easier losing a loved one. I know it was an extremely difficult decision to have made but it was an extremely selfless decision. What is comforting to know is your dog passed away with the ones he loved the most and the ones that loved him the most.

I'm so sorry for your loss! You're making me cry! I've never had a pet untill FH and I adopted our Bentley 4 years ago, so I don't yet know what you're going through.. All I know is that time heals all things, and you just just to remember all the good times, rather than the last few days. So sorry for your loss <3 <3 <3

Thank you all for your kind words. It is so hard to be in the house without him. It just feels so empty. So much of our lives revolved around him. He is being cremated today so I am hoping having his ashes back at home will be some closure for me.I know it will get easier but we are all taking it so hard so I think that isn't making it easier for anyone.
Thank you all again

I'm so sorry to hear this. I went through this a few years ago with our first family dog. As she got older her health gradually declined and then got to the point where she had no quality of life left and would have been kept here selfishly. You really just have to let yourself grieve and give yourself time. They are family, and the loss takes the same toll on a person. My condolences

Thanks know you all for your kind words. I feel a but of closure knowing that he has been cremated and now is home. I read dogs stay alive to prevent their owners from experiencing pain. I feel if I didn't make that difficult choice he would have stayed with us and suffered so I didn't know any suffering. I feel a bit of closure and while I'm still devastated the pain is beginning to subside.I have decided to have a tattoo done in his remember of my baby. I was able to have his paw inked and have a few copies so I can bring one with me. I also found a quote to go with it that I found: 'even though you cannot see me, know that I will always be with you. ' as something from the dog with his print. I thank you all again!!

I know how you feel :(We lost our golden retriever at just 7 years old in December after an 8 month battle with lymphoma. His last days were unbearable to watch and even though it hurts, I know we did the right thing because like you said, they don't want us to know how much they're suffering, and we know he was.
For our favors we are donating money to the golden retriever lifetime study which is evaluating why so many dogs ( especially goldens) get cancer. We also enrolled our new puppy in the study as a way to honor our dog who passed.
All I can say is it gets better with time, and soon you will just remember all the happy moments you had together.
I love your tattoo idea! Please post a pic when you get it!

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my Casey a little over 11 years ago. She was my first cat and was better trained than most dogs. She knew how to sit, stay, come, bring it (her toy) here, go to bed, get down and many others. I went to work one day and she was fine, when I came home 4 hours later I found her dead in the kitchen. She hadn't gotten into anything I can only guess that it was a seizure or heart attack, she was only 8.We went to the crematory and they were very nice and I picked up a card that had a poem on it that helped. I am posting it below, I hope it helps ease the grief you adn your family are going through.
--Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I had to put to sleep a cat that was part of the family for 16 years. We had him since i was 11. I can imagine what you are going through. You seem like a great family for pets and i hope that one day you can open your heart and home to another animal again. until then, my thoughts are with you <3Welcome New Vendors
