So today I got one of the worst migraines I've ever had. I only get them 2 or 3 times each year but this is my 2nd one in a month. It hit while I was teaching a class and someone had to drive me home from work! So I was wondering what some other migraine suffers use to treat their migraines. I got the Excedrin Migraine and I'm waiting to hear back from my doctor. I'm just worried that with the increased stress as my wedding approaches I'm going to get these more and more. Any tips would be helpful. Thanks!!!
ETA: So I saw my Dr. today and she gave me Imitrax. I'm also seeing a neurologist on Thursday b/c she said I have a risk for stroke b/c i'm on birth control!!! So now I might have to go off my BC, I'm not happy about that!

Re: NWR: Migraines
I see a neurologist for my migraines. They gave me a couple of things to try to curb them. Mine are stress related. You might want to look into a medication (and of course I forget the name), but it's actually meant to lower blood pressure, but as an effect, it reduces migraines. He also gave me some others meds. I took the Imitrex pills and shots, which only made them worse. Axert made them worse. I fight with him everytime because he says taking too much Excedrin Migraine is no good, but it's the only thing that helps and I only take it if I really really have to. FM me if you want to talk.

I use Axert.... you take it right as you feel a migraine comming on and it squashes it before it gets bad. I get migraines every month, so this basically gave me my life back and my grades shot through the roof at school haha. It's a triptan, and you need a script for it, so call a neurologist and make an apt

Thanks so much. It was very scary for me today. I get a visual aura and literally couldn't see a thing, other than like a flash from a camera! I'm going to try the Excedrin for now. At least it will be a quick fix until I figure this out.

I use imitrex and it totally helps. The trick is that you have to take it right when you feel your symptoms come on because if you wait too long to take the pills they sometimes don't work. I think my migraines are related to hormones and also stress.

thats really strange I just got off the phone discussing this with my friend.. I get them from it seems to be lately allergies.. I get them the same time of the day around 1:30pm.. no matter where I am .. and sometimes its just hormonial..
What I do is take 3 excedrian.. and you need to stay out of light and make sure you are not near any perfumes or strong smelling items.. Take a nap.. its the only way to completey get rid of it..

Re: NWR: Migraines
I came home from work and slept for like 3 hours, which helped, but now i feel like I have a migraine hangover. I can see and I don't feel sick to my stomach but my head still pounds. Being on the computer probably isn't helping much.
Thanks so much everyone. I really appreciate all your suggestions!

Im on this also. I have suffered from migranes since I was in High School but the added stress does not help it.

Re: NWR: Migraines
I would get a perscription med for it. I started taking Imatrex recently and it helps alot. If your migraines are occuring more frequently, I would definitely see a dr.

Re: NWR: Migraines
try asking your dentist (or asking your dr about a dentist who does this). they make these little tiny mouth guard things that keep you from clenching your jaw at night (which can cause a lot of migranes). it's not for everyone, but it sounds like your's may be increasing b/c of stress so it may be worth looking into. and i dunno about you, but the less meds i take, the better (i hate taking anything though).

Re: NWR: Migraines
I feel your pain....I suffered from migraines beginning last fall when I started a graduate program full time while working full time. They came on instantly from the stress. I was getting like 3 and 4 a week. I was trying to take 3 Excedrins, but they didn't releive the pain. I think I probably looked greenin the face every time I got one, the pain was usually one sided, and I found myself very sensitive to light, and if my symptoms worsened I got really nautious.
I saw a neurologist that specializes in migraines/headaches in Stony Brook and I was put on Topamax which is taken daily to regulate seratonin levels which cause a high frequency of migraines. And when I actually felt a Migraine coming on I would take Relpax -- which works instantly I felt. Within 30 minutes my migraine would be completely gone!! After a certain amount of time with no migraines I came off of the Topamax and only take a Relpax when needed. And to be honest I have had maybe 2 migraines since July. The Topamax really worked. Hope this helps -- migraines are not fun to go through.

I definitely came to the right place about this! FH's uncle is my dentist so it'll be easy enough to ask him about this. I'm going to try everything- dentist, dr., neurologist if i have to, whatever it takes! I was imagining this happening on my wedding day and of course, it stressed me out, but I don't want it to come to that.

Re: NWR: Migraines
I can usually tell when a migraine is coming on. If I take 2 aleve and lay down with an ice pack on my head it usually wont turn into a full blown migraine. I get them often also (knock on wood havent had one for a while). My dr. prescribed me something but I hate taking it b/c it really knocks you out and I feel really out of it from them.

Re: NWR: Migraines
I used to get migraines 2-3 times a month in High school. I saw a neorologist who put me in Imitrex for when the migraine started. It worked amazing!! I used to get such bad migraines that I would lock myself in my room for 2 days with the blinds completely shut and an extra large puke bucket.
The neurologist also sent me to physical therapy. I went 3 times a week for 6 months. They would put a heating pad on my neck shoulders and upper back for 20 minutes and then massage my back all the way to my scalp for 45 minutes. I found out that I carry a lot of stress in my neck which was turning into knots and pinching nerves thus, leading to my migraines. 6 months later I was migraine free and have never had a problem since. I go to a massage thereapist once or twice a month to keep my neck 'loose' and it seems to work!! Good Luck! Feel better

I had brain surgery 19 yrs ago and just started suffering from migraines last year. I take Axert and Relpax it all depends on what stage I catch the headache.
I have found that if I catch it early enough....3 Excedrine Migraines usually does the trick.
I sympathize with anyone that gets these headaches The stress of planning a wedding dont seem to help in addition to the everyday stressors you already have
I hope your doctor found something for you

Re: NWR: Migraines
I use Relpax but it's for onset, so when you feel one coming on you take it and it cuts the migrain off in it's path.... it probably wont' work if you don't feel/have symptoms beforehand.
I feel your bad though... they're the worst and the always hit ya at the most inconvenient times

Re: NWR: Migraines
I am in the same boat as you where I generally get them 2-3 times a year. The only thing that works for me is to drink a can of regular coke (not diet), take 2 excedrin migraine and then a nap in total darkness and silence. I think it is the caffeine that does the trick b/c that is really the only distinction between regular excedrin and excedrin migraine. I am not on any kind of presciption meds b/c I get them so infrequently....but I get the aura you described almost everytime...SO painful and scary. The worst is when you try to bend down and you feel like your head is about to split open!!
