NWR: Must vent about temp assignment and language barriers...

Ok so i work for a temp agency and I was sent to great arcgitectural firm for an easy sit and asner phone sjob. However....no one speaks english clearly except the head hancho and I can't ask hima million questions!

-hangs head- I am trying to be cheerful and polite but already I have had to ask the gentleman I report to, to repeat himself nearly every time he asks me a question. He is polite and lovely to look at but he is also French...VERY French, and I can barely understand him! He's gettign frustrated with me it seems and I am frustrated with him! Not showing it but boy oh boy do I feel it!

The accent is great for some dreams FH doesnt need to know about but as far as getting through the day....it's been a VERY long one thus far and will be an even longer Friday...Monday...and Tuesday....

I've never temp'ed before, so I can't even imagine how tough it must be coming into something like that. I did, however, work for a Japanese company for a few years and lots of guys didn't speak English well so I was always either smiling and nodding my head or constantly asking them to repeat themselves.

Here's the good thing--you are listening to French accents, which is so much prettier than Japanese accents!

LOL RK thanks...Boss has no accent. But very old jewish gentlmen with little patience-at least Florent is good to look at ;

THEY SMOKE IN THE OFFICE! ISNT THAT LIKE TOTALLY ILLEGAL IN NYC!!!! ***!!!!! No wonder they have every window ope and and freezing me out...Ok..breathe good money ! Money money..thats the mantra....

My boss smokes in and around my office too. As a former smoker I try to not be bitchy about it (even though I know it's illegal) but he carries his cig around with him (comes to my desk and basicly blows his smoke in my face) and doesn't keep it in his OWN personal office (which I would be fine with)....it's really gross. The man is like 75 and feels that he's earned the right to be above the law I guess.

The problem has been mentioned to the VP of the company (his son) and he says he can't do anything about it. The Board of Health was also called (after someone was fired and felt the need to retaliate I'm assuming)....and amazingly they passed whatever they needed to about a smoke-free workplace.

It's frustrating.

Sorry to go on so long.....it's a situation I can really identify with though.

Im feeling whoozey at this point...considering calling the agency and asking them to find someone else...I mean its not a bad job..but def not the greatest. he just came out and barked at me to fix the wires of the phone that are dangling and Im like ok how would you like me to do it? (it was taped and he said he didnt wnat more tape) He literally waved me off and said 'do ti....' It was FINE till he showed up 2 hours ago....

Call the agency and tell them you are allergic to cigarrette smoke and they're smoking in the office. Hopefully they'll reassign you.

I actually AM allergic to cig smoke and wouldn't last half an hour in there.
