My cat is great, but he has this one little habit that drives FH and I nuts: he scratches and pulls up our carpet. Chunks of it. Usually at around 4am. I don't know what to do anymore; I tried everything they suggested in the cat ownership books. It's at the point where we're considering having him front-declawed. But I'd love other suggestions! Thanks!

Re: NWR: My cat's scratching is driving me bananas!
Oh is this a new thing or has it always been like this.
We are having major issues with our smaller cat. Our cat has been peeing/ spraying. GRR I almost dropped him off at the stupid shelter i was so mad. I know how you feel. Call your vet, she/ he may have some recommendations. Have you tried all sorts of scratching posts.

my cats have this nasty habit of tearing up our leather couch. my ex roommate, her cat scratched it first. now my cats think it's okay. it's almost totally ruined. try a scratching post, we haven't tried that yet but it supposedly works.
if your cat is an outdoors cat it's not good for it to be declawed. even just the front. it's gotta defend itself in fights!

please don't declaw your kitty!! i don't mean to sound like some crazy animal rights activist or something, but declawing a cat is SOOOO painful to the kitty. i understand your frustration, my cats tear up our carpets and our chairs...and as much as FH complains, i would never get them declawed.
have you tried spraying febreze on the carpet in heavy amounts? or some other smelly stuff? kitties hate getting that smelly stuff in their noses, maybe try spraying it on the carpet really heavily before bed at night for a few weeks. that might keep him from doing it. try it!

Scratch posts work!! My cat gets all his aggression out on it....it is made of carpet too so it the same thing. I swear to God my cat went through three of these already and he's only a little over a year old! ,,,,and when I mean went through you can't imagine how he tears these things apart, I think he's part tiger lol.

LOL so's mine. We actually bought him a carpeted scratching post. It's more like a carpet-covered kitty condo - it's got different floors and a little hide-out room. He's an indoor cat, so I thought that this would be enough to keep him from distroying my house...
And I still don't understand why he does this ONLY in the middle of the night.

Re: NWR: My cat's scratching is driving me bananas!
my 1 yr old kitten does that sometimes too, like shes lifting the carpet with her front paws - she does it at night also and I think its cause shes bored ... ive started leaving her 'toy box' open in my room at night so she has stuff to keep her occupied and its worked... she still pulls the carpet sometimes but not nearly as often!
