NWR: My dad just called ...

NWR: My dad just called ...

and told me about a job his company is looking to fill. He works for a construction company that works on big projects, like rebuiding roads or schools in NYC, etc. It's in the marketing dept. and I would be writing proposals, etc.

I have a journalism background so on paper this is a good idea. But I worked in marketing depts and there is always pressure to get more jobs or more clients, and sell sell sell, and be concerned allll the time about the bottom line. And I haaaaaaated that. I work in a film prod. company now and am not sure it's what I want to do - I am pretty sure it's not what I want to do - but I don't think I want to go back to marketing/pr either.

Another problem I have re: working in a marketing dept. is that I feel that in order to do well, you really need to CARE A LOT about the company. I have never really cared that much about any company I have worked for, ever - as long as I am getting paid ... you know? In order to SELL a company's strongpoints, you need to care.

I explained all of this to my dad and my mom (who was on the other extension .. ) but they still want me to apply. I love that my dad thought of me - he's a very quiet person and for him to think of me, it means that he has confidence in me, which is something he's never said. But it's just not ME. I don't want to sit in an office again and go to meetings and all of that. The writing might be nice but that's it. And there is no job description on their website, nothing about it at all, so in order for him to get any info, he'd have to imply I *might* be interested - and I don't want him putting me out there if it's not for me.

I feel terrible that I basically told him 'thanks but no thanks' but I really just want to sit around and edit someone else's writing all day.

And I am not even LOOKING for a job right now!!!!!

awww Thats so sweet that your dad thought of you (seriously!!!)

Apply - the worst that can happen is you can find out more about the job and just tell your Dad that it wasn't what you were looking for.

He probably just wants you to be happy!!!!

Problem is - I really need to stay where I am until the end of the year. If I leave before Jan 1, I don't get any of my 401K matching funds, and if I leave before Oct 25, I may have to take my HM time off as unpaid. Of course I forgot about this very legitimate reason when my dad was trying to sell the job to me.
