NWR: My poor doggie...I'm so upset **Update**

Original post by nraboni

So back in April my Golden Retriever, Morgan, had a seizure. I took him to the vet and did research online. The vet said since he was almost 4 yrs this is the age where dogs can begin to start having seizures and that this could be something that happened once and will never happen again, it could happen every few months or it could become very frequent. I did some reserach online and read about the different types of seizures and the medications and prayed that this was a one time only thing.

Well last night he had another one and this one lasted a lot longer then the one he had in April. When he came out of it he was ok but his breathing was rapid because his body just went through a tramatic thing and his blood pressure went up causing his body temp to go up so he was trying to cool himself down. I couldn't sleep all night. I kept waking up to make sure he was ok.

This morning we woke up and began our morning routine and he was fine. Then as I was getting ready for work I heard him jump off my bed and start to walk towards me but he was slipping on the wood floors. I went towards him and could see that he was starting to have another seizure. Thank god FH was at the dentist down the block because I called him and he came home just as Morgan was about to go into the full seizure. This morning when he came out of it he was totally fine and back to his old self. Since I was so freaked out I took him to the vet. While at the vet they took him in the back to do some bloodwork and cut his nails and he starting having another seizure.

I am soo upset. He is my baby. Like seriously, this dog is my life and my heart hurts knowing that he is in the hospital going through all of these tests and he is all alone and is probably going to have to be on medication for the rest of his life.

So when I left the vet I went home to finish getting ready for work and decided to bring him his favorite toy...his best friend other then me. My vet is soo nice and they were like don't hesitate to call to check on him as many times as you want.

Sorry this is long...but I just needed to get it out. I am trying not to cry at my desk.

Has anyone else ever had an animal that was epileptic?

***UPDATE***
Thank you all so much for your kind words and your own experiences with seizures. I picked Morgan up yesterday and spoke with the doctor. The doc said that Morgan does have Seizure Disorder which is just another word for Epilepsy. He will have to be on Phenobarbital possibly for the rest of his life but he will live a long and healthy life. He said that it is very common in certain breeds of dogs and that although it is scary to witness...it is much less scary for the dog.

So I am going to change his food and buy him lots of presents and give him hugs and kisses and just hope that the medicine works and he doesn't have any more seizures.

Sorry about your baby. As soon as I read it I knew what it was. When I was growing up I had a Golden and he had Epilepsy. I know it's scary but the meds will control the seizures and he should have a normal life span!!! Good luck. You and Morgan are in my prayers.

I'm glad to hear that your baby is feeling better.

If you don't mind my asking, what food are you changing him to? My parents 18 month old husky had a seizure in May and another in June, so I'm very interested in whether a dietary change may help her.

TIA

I used to feed him Nutro Max for large breed dogs (Nutro Max Large Breed) but then Fh wanted me to change it to a more 'fun' food...lol (something with meaty bits). So I changed it to Pedigree for large dogs (Pedigree Large Breed ). I am going to go back to Nutro Max. I asked the vet if I should change the food to an organic food and he said that since organic foods for pets aren't regulated that he would not recommend that but that he would recommend changing back to the higher quality brand of dog food. The specialy foods that can only be bought in Petsmart and Petco.

What are your parents feeding the husky?

She gets one of the higher end brands from Petco. It may be Nutro Max, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll have to check with them.

Thanks for the info. I hope Morgan is back to his old self soon. I know what you mean about it being a scary experience. After seeing each of Kyla's seizures, I was a mess, but she's just running around giving everyone puppy kisses!
