NWR: Need Help

NWR: Need Help

I have been sick for the better part of 2 months now.. I went to the doctor a million times, who reffered me to an allergist who said I am highly allergic to my cats. Worst part is, im also allergic to allergy medicine except benedryl (which puts me to sleep)

He basically said get rid of them or feel like this until I do. Not sure why this all started now, I have had them for 3+ years but something is making it worse. I cant breathe, cant swallow, have hives.

My parents wont take them and i have no idea what to do. I cant just dump them on the street. Anyone have any ideas how I can try and find them a good home? I really can not continue to feel this sick everyday. They are the sweetest animals and I feel so bad..

thanks

Can you either post something on Craig's List or bring them to a no-kill shelter? SOMEBODY will take your kitties!! I wish I could.

Re: NWR: Need Help

FH developed a severe allergy to my cat after we had been together for already 2 years. It just happens sometimes, it's weird.

My poor Angel has been gone for almost 4 months now, and FH STILL has his allergies. It takes a while to go away, and sometimes, depending on the length and severity of the allergy, it turns into an asthma or a chronic thing. I honestly believe FH will never recover because he had the severe allergy for over 3 years. I hope it turns out ok for you, and wish I could do something to help, but I obviously can never take in another cat.

Thanks.. that is why i started to go to the doc in the first place, I was having chronic bronchitis and swollen glands. Now i feel like i can never breathe, constantly have a cough and sore throat, I get hives if I sit on the furniture where they were. Its getting bad. I cant even take anything except benedryl but that makes me sleepy. I only feel good when Im out of my house.

Something like this happened to me too unfortunately :( I was always allergic to cats when I was little but then they thought I grew out of it and then all of a sudden it came back really, really, really severely. Please take care of yourself.

Are allergy shots an option?

Re: NWR: Need Help

I had a similar problem...

My neighbors have a cat that was very friendly and I always played with him whenever he was in our yard (he is basically an outdoor cat). I used to let him in the house, give him a treat, and then play with him and send him back outside. There were times where it was raining out and his family wasnt home and I would let him in my house.

A few years ago when I was playing with him I just started rubbing my eyes, getting hives, and couldnt breathe. I put him outside and took benadryl and I was ok. I continued to play with him and have the same symptoms and then I realized all of a sudden I am allergic to cats, after all these years...

It s*cks bc I love cats, but I cannot breathe when I am around them. Benadryl is the only thing that works for me too. Its so bad that most times when I am in a house with a cat, I cannot even breathe. I went to an allergist and they confirmed I was allergic to cats and dogs and that allergy shots would help. I stopped going bc the office didnt like my insurance, so now I suffer when going to friends and families houses with cats and dogs. When I get on FH's insurance I will pursue the shots again. They are even safe to get when you are pregnant as well, when most of those allergy meds are not.

I take Zyrtec every night since I have an allergy to mold, dust, pollen, cats, and dogs and it really does reduce the allergic reaction to these pets, but it does not eliminate it. I hate it especially since most of my family ownes a cat, dog, or both and I cannot stay for long. Pills do not work, but hopefully I can get back on the allergy shots again.

Why not see if your parents or friend can take them for a few days and test to see if they are causing you to feel sick... I just dont understand how now you feel sick after having them so long...maybe you have mold or something that is triggering this.

The doctor said that it could just happen. It took me so long to even find out it was allergies because i never had this problem. just thought i was constantly getting sick

He didn't mention allergy shots to me though so I am going to call him on Tuesday and ask about that. I am allergic to most allergy medicines so I dont know what the shots will be like. Zyrtec landed me in the hospital last year. Im not allergic to ANYTHING except the pollen, my cats, and allergy medicine. Go figure.

I feel like the worst fur mommy alive right now FH kicked the cats out so he could clean the house very well (he vacuumed everything he could think of) to see if it would help. That was at 3pm and one of my cats still hasnt come back. They are not outdoor cats, but we let them out to explore in the backyard all the time and they never go far, I am not sure where he is now and I feel so bad. I am sitting up at the door waiting...

ugh what a mess this is

They sell a spray you can rub on their fur and it's supposed to help you stop sneezing and not have the watery eyes. Can you maybe use that?
