jennbaby, Sorry to hear about this pickle you're in. It is very rude when people do that, and then turn the whole thing around on you like you're the rude one... pa-lease! Unfortunately, it sounds like your co-workers have nothing better to do, and if gossiping amongst each other is what they do best, my advice is to ignore them as best as you can.
Good luck, and keep your head up, it may take a few days for the gossip group to forget it ever happened... and believe me, it will die down eventually, like when someone else falls prey...

ugh, that is awful. I hate confrontation. Obviously these two are ignorant. I even hate when the nail ladies talk back and forth, I feel like they are talking about me. Once, at the border in Canada at duty free, we were paying for some stuff in American money (FH has dual citizenship) and the lady said something nasty about me in french bc I told her to keep the three pennies change or something like that. Of course, I had no idea. Next thing I know, my FH says something to her in French, which obviously she had no idea he was French Canadian. She turned so red, served her right. I don't have any advice, I don't know what I would do. Have you ever had a problem with this woman before? Maybe take her aside and tell her about the movie they showed, and explain why it makes you feel uncomfortable. either that, or just let it lie and blow over. good luck!

Jen that is horrible! If that is office policy and they showed you a MOVIE which clearly stated that those ladies were violating office policy, then you should speak with your supervisor. You obviously work at a company that cares about the comfort level of its employees if it went to the trouble of documenting this kind of behavior in a movie to show new employees. It is too bad that some people do not know how to behave in the workplace.

Jpsgirl - that is too funny! I wish I could have seen that woman's face when your FH started to speak to her in French

Jen, I hate people like that! They have nothing better to do than gossip. You didn't do anything wrong and I'm sure they do this to everyone. Don't let them upset you. They are obviously not worth it.

I would speak with HR about the situation. I agree that speaking to you like that was totally uncalled for.

What horrible women. I hope things have cooled down a bit today. But let me tell you this has happened to me quite often since I have lived in Florida...so much so that I am going to take a Spanish class. Some people just have no manners.
But like someone else said they're not worth it so try not to let them get to you, but I would speak to your supervisor about it.

I must agree- especially after you requested nicely, no reason to get nasty. Definitely document it. If I were in your shoes, I would go to mgmt, b/c you should not have to deal with rude behavior, and insult on top of it !!!!!!!

I speak French, and would not insult anyone in that fashion !!!!!!!!

Hope you feel better, and don't let ignorant people get you down, they are soooo not worth it. !!!!!!

They are plain rude! No other words to describe it.
Im there with you though, that happens to me all the time at work. I work on the trains and I will charge people a fare or try to explain something and they start talking in another language right in front of me to each other or my favorite start laughing and talking in another language.
I could understand if they dont speak english at all, but most of them are able to speak it just fine and that is not cool.

I agree with the other girls, definitely make a point of documenting it and maybe having an off the record conversation with your boss or an HR representative.

jenn, i'm greek and i'm not offended because frankly, i know that greek people can sometimes be that way...i've had it happen to me where people would say something about me in greek without knowing that i speak the language fluently and understand perfectly!! it's funny to see the looks on their faces when i respond...

BUT not all greek people are like that - i promise!!!

This really su*$s!! Isn't it horrible how people can make you so uncomfortable at work! Do you have friends there, whom you can talk to when these girls are being complete jerks? Maybe you can try that...I hope it all works out for you!
