I want to throw FH a birthday party and am looking for a fun bar/lounge that will give us an area to hang out with 20-30 people (for free) and where everyone can just pay for their drinks themselves.
Past places I've had mine/his birthdays were: Banc, Public House, Arctica Bar, Zanzibar, Sugar, Bar XIX and Honey, so we're looking for somewhere new

Ainsworth--a bit of a sports bar but a really good scene nonetheless and very new.
Town Tavern on West 3rd---its a bit more of a dive bar but there are booths to sit and great music.
Aspen Social lounge?
Cellar Bar--not really new but always a good choice.

Vigbar in Soho has a room that you can rent out. Only problem is there is no bar in it, so you have to get drinks in the front. Cool space though.

Metro 53 gives out smaller rooms downstairs and people can pay a flat fee for an open bar. We had a b-day party there once and it was 30 pp for open bar all night. It was fun. Check it out.

That's a bit tough for bars/lounges in Manhattan esp for 20-30ppl. You can try getting your group to arrive earlier to secure seating. Some of my favorite spots: Sea ( Williamsburg), Pete's Candy Store (Bar/Lounge in Williamsburg), Barcade (Williamsburg), Park (W.18-19st. btwn 8-9 Ave), Otto's Shrunken Head (538 E. 14st, LES). If you're venturing further up in Queens, Hush (Mediterranean, Maspeth), Bartini (Forest Hills), 5 Burros (Forest Hills).

As often as I have been in the city (that was my life forever, before the engagement, now we cut back big time) I will ALWAYS refer people to the Gaansevort Hotel. I never leave unhappy and the crowd is awesome. Its in the meatpacking.

if u want something different there is bowlmar or lucky strikes they have bowling,pool, lounge good music and great bars bowlmar has another upstairs lounge called carnival they have a bunch of carnival games that u can win prizes...hth
