NWR: Personal/Woman Question

Anyone getting the shot GARDASIL ???

Does it really hurt afterwards????

My sis said some of her friends get it and its really painful for a couple of days afterwards.

Does your insurance cover the costs?

TIA

Re: NWR: Personal/Woman Question

I have not gotten it because my Mom is a nurse and she says that MANY girls are in terrible pain and she has even seen several faint immediately after getting the shot. A lot of girls end up fine, but the sheer fact that girls are fainting and in pain makes me feel like I don't need this shot - I'm not sleeping w/anyone else besides FH, and if he had something to transmit to me, he already would have in the past 6 years.

i got it and it was sore for a little while after
most of my friends also got it and complained of the same thing
have you ever gotten a flu shot? i thought the flu shot was worse.

i think its better to get it and suffer for a little bit then have HPV for the rest of your life

FYI: HPV can cause cancer AND it can be caught from ways other than sexual contact

Re: NWR: Personal/Woman Question

where do they give the shot that it hurts so bad? I've gotten a shot every week in my arm for the last 12 weeks, and it hurt for about 2 mins ... just curious where they could give it to hurt so bad!

my dr charges extra for it, and freakin everything else.

I think it depends on your Dr and your Insurance.

I havent had a shot of it though.

I got 2 out of the 3 shots. I go back next month for the last one. I didn't have any serious pain at all with either of them. My arm was a tiny bit sore for a little while but nothing terrible. All of my sisters got the shots too (their insurance covered it) I don't have insurance so I had to pay for mine.

How else can you get it?

The government's disease control website says:

Genital HPV is passed on through genital contact, most often during vaginal and anal sex. A person can have HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sex. Most infected persons do not realize they are infected or that they are passing the virus to a sex partner.

Very rarely, a pregnant woman with genital HPV can pass HPV to her baby during vaginal delivery. In these cases, the child may develop warts in the throat or voice box – a condition called recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP).

stupid question but what is this shot about??

Re: NWR: Personal/Woman Question

it's given in the arm??? can't hurt too bad if a flu shot hurts worse ... they don't hurt that bad. all depends on who gives it. like i said, i had 12 shots over the past 12 weeks, one a week, and sometimes a PA would give it - she gives them good. When the doc gave it, I needed an ice pack. All depends on the technique. I am too old to get it but I recommend it - wish I could get it. Hate being too old for anything!!!

my doc told me that more and more people are getting it who have not had sex - most likely through some other form of contact like a toilet seat or something, which is nasty. . . I can't find any information about it online so I dont want to spread misinformation, even though i was told that by my gyn.

I want to know why the girls are fainting from pain or from the medication?

True - I don't know the answer.

But, two months after my Mom told me this it was a top headline on Yahoo news. I'm going to go back through my e-mail and see if I can find the link to the article - I forwarded to my mom as soon as I saw it!

ETA: I found the link to the Yahoo article, but it's from January so the link doesn't work anymore. I did find a similar article though:

Gardasil Shot

I think that the shot protects from a very serious disease, and I totally understand the choice of those who get it. But the fact that it's brand new and girls are fainting and no one knows if its from the pain or the shot - that's why I am not getting it at the present time.

Re: NWR: Personal/Woman Question

i was just reading about it and i found this:

How common is HPV? Who gets it?

Genital HPV is a very common virus. Some doctors think it is almost as common as the common cold virus. In the United States, over 6 million people (men and women) get an HPV infection every year. Almost half of the infections are in people between 15 and 25 years of age. About one-half to three-fourths of the people who have ever had sex will have HPV at some time in their life.

Also, HPV can take years to develop. Which means you can have it laying dormant in your body for years before showing symptoms. Getting the shots now can prevent certain strains of it from developing.

I never realized HPV was that common

Re: NWR: Personal/Woman Question

hpv is transmitted through sexual intercourse.. and since all of us are in a monogamous relationships it is not relevant to say the least..

i have quite a few physicians and nurses in my circle, and at some point, we've all discussed about gardasil and they all advice against it.. the drug is brand new and it's not necessary..

not that i am a gyn but it is not passed through by sitting on a dirty toilet seat.. and ladies please bear in mind the most you can get by sitting on a nasty toilet seat is a yeast infection.. unless you have an open wound and the person before you left some droplets of blood on the seat and the blood is fresh you are looking at hep c.. and that tooo is extremely rare as the virus dies within exposure to air within an allotted time.. but precaution is good.. wash your hands before and after and check before you sit..

actually... just because we are in monogamous relationships does not mean it is irrelevant. My half sister past away due to cervical cancer 2 years ago. (leaving a very young daughter behind. The HPV she contracted was from her husband. So like I said in my earlier post... it can take years to develop. Also, most men have NO symptoms. Which means if any of our FHs had sex lets say... 4 years ago with someone else... we could still be at risk. I have only been with FH for 3 years. It's just not a risk I am willing to take. I don't know where his ex girlfriends have been

i completely agree with that
thats what my obgyn said that men have no symptoms

Re: NWR: Personal/Woman Question

i dont understand why some girls are saying that it is 'brand new'? the HPV vaccine has been around for a long time - this 'push' for vaccination is fairly new

and i applogize for the toilet seat comment lol i swear i was told that it was passed to some people who had not had sexual contact but just ignore that bc i cant find any evidence!

i forgot to mention previous sexual partners.. if it applies to you, by all means, i can see why someone would want to..

women don't show tell tale signs either.. but it's up to the person to decide whether a shot is right for them or not..

all the best on your decision..
