UCK, I make my students write in a journal for 10 min at the beginning of class. Asking them to free write just makes them stare at me like I'm crazy. Whats a good topic? My brain is fried. Nonfiction.

Maybe for the next essay, although these kids were in 5th grade or something when it happened! It blows my mind when I think about them being little kids when it happened. Although it coudl really be interesting to see a child's perspective.

This might be good. Maybe something about how ANYTHING you put on the internet, whether it be a picture, comment, etc, can potentially be out there when they have grandkids. How does this affect the way they use the Internet?
Or something else...How does their life today compare to what they thought it would be like when they started high school.

LOL, if they are freshman, then they weren't quite 5. About 11 or 12, I'd estimate. That might be a good topic, but it also might be kinda rough if these kids had parents/other family in the towers or on the flights. Maybe a better topic would be 'how the world has changed since 9/11'

What about their earliest memory when they were kids? I find it amazing that some people remember back to when they were not even old enough to talk and other people don't remember anything before middle school!
ETA... spelling error, can't leave that on an english teacher's post!
