So i'm watching TV, and this morning NBC is being chastised by ABC news for showing the video of the shooter who sent a pkge to NBC from VA Tech. ABC just announced that they will not show the video, audio of the VA tech shooter...since they feel that showing the video only gives this psycho the platform he desperately desired...as well as may make others believe they can become a martyr like him.
NBC says they did it cause they know ppl want to KNOW why this kid did this, and perhaps ppl seeing this video will help.
What do we think ladies?

i have to agree with both. Does he deserve all this media attention and platform, absolutely not, however should we, especially family of loved ones they lost, see it to get some kind of understanding aboutt he situation, yes. I am mixed i guess.

I don't think it was in good taste so soon after the shooting, of course we want to know why he did it, but it hurt me, who has no personal ties to VA or any of it students, to watch this lunatic ramble and rant and I don't think it even explained much....I don't know if I saw the entire thing, but he was just rambling on incoherently, it seemed to me.

I kind of agree with ABC. On Oprah they were taking about this yesterday and they had this guy that survived Columbine and he goes around to schools talking to kids and he was saying that lots of people who do something like this or were thinking about it tell him that it's the emphasis on the shooters, pics being on TV and on the covers of newspapers and magazines. Somehow they interpret this to be the attention they couldn't get before. I don't think we need to fuel the types of people who do these things into thinking somehow this will make them famous. I don't think we'll ever understand why he did this because it will never make sense because we're not crazy.

I think we always give these ppl what they want. He obviously sent that to the news channel to get on TV. Why can't they tell us what the video was about, without giving him the air time he wants? it's the same thing with the terrorists...they just want ratings!!

The police should watch the video and then explain what they think of it. He should not be made a martyr by playing his video over and over again. That being said, NBC had it 's highest ratings because of the video, NBC is a business. And it is easy for ABC to know chastise the other station because they don't have exclusive rights. Everyone who airs the video it has to say courtesy of NBC. So rather than promote, why not jump on the NBC is bad bandwagon!! JMHO
I personally have not and will not watch, I will pray for the families and friends involved in this, but I will not be a part of the media frenzy.

Although I did watch it part of me thinks No--He doesn't deserve the platform he wanted......
ETA: What I don't agree with is that ABC is commenting negatively about NBC airing the videos b/c I do believe if they received the package first themselves they too would have aired it. I think it's a catch 22. If they didn't air it, people would be questioning them about why not? Now that they've aired it people are mad and asking Why did you show it?

I don't think the video should have been shown. They could have just said the reasons he stated for doing what he did, but it does act as an incentive for those who are contemplating acts like this to gain attention. It gives them their 15 minutes of fame. And if families want to see it, they should private access to it. But the media could give 2 ***** about the rest of the world and how they are affected.

I agree! There is no need to hear or see his story! He had a sickness and people like this want the attention that they craved and never recieved and this is how they can finally recieve it, but I think it needs to stop. I am disappointed that they would actually air all the extra videos and pictures. This is our country and it is turning to ****, we need to not give in, we need to stop airing this stuff, we need to speak to our kids more, be better parents(listeners).
We will never truly understand why he did it, what he was thinking.

I did not get to watch the video..if i had the chance though i dont know if i would...and i agree with you it is a catch 22- ABC most likely would have done the same thing if they received the box first....
however, unfortunately we cannot get the media out of terrible tragedies such as this one...this will definitely be on the news for awhile and yes these sociopaths who go on a killing spree this is what they want- they want there names in the news and for everyone to see what they did so they can finally feel important and like a martyr- however like i said we are always going to be making it easy for them to obtain that cause really how can we tell the news reporters to not report on a terrible tragety such as this. And although I dont think the tape should have been aired- maybe spoken about- I dont think IMO that our media will keep things such as this from people- especially since it is a cut throat business- who gets what story aired first you know!!
It is unfortunate though because ppl are forgetting about the victims and their families and focusing all on the shooter.....I feel horrible for all the families involved and students and faculty etc.

i dont know what abc is talking about because i watched the 11pm news last night an it was on and it was also on this am at like 630 when i turned the tv on, they didnt play it in its entirety but they played clips of it, just like every other news station that wants viewers to tune in. Honestly the crap he was spewing didnt offer and reason or explanation, it just showed how really sick this kid was. frankly i disagree with anyone playing it. i find it quite disturbing and eerie. I agree with what an earlier poster said that these people including the terrorist should get this attention because its exactly what they want.

I said yes b/c maybe it could help others understand his unhealthy state of mind and maybe it will help prevent another tragedy if anyone knows another person like this!! JMO

Re: NWR: Poll on brodcasting VA Tech Shooter video
Hmm, I find it hard to believe that if he sent it to ABC that they would not have showed it first... BUT that's a non-issue at this point.
It's odd to me how NBC says that they feel people should know the reasons he states WHY he did it... I think to myself LIKE THAT MAKES IT OK. There are NO reasons that could ever justify taking another person's life (or many) like he did-- in the way he did-- I don't care WHAT happened in his childhood... I mean, the fact that they even DIGNIFY that video with serious thought is ludicrous and that's why sometimes I hate the media because in one breath they say what a tragedy yet in the next breath they are broadcasting it ALL over the place... And making it out to be some great world record he broke 'Worst in US HISTORY' like it's a GOOD thing... I'm thinking, wow why don't we make it out to be a little bit more of a competition so some other NUT can come and try to break the 'record' Disgusting!
This whole fascination we have with people like this killer irks me. The act itself is shocking and awful and that's IT... The only thing I'm gripped by and concerned about at this point is protecting others further in the future and trying to prevent this from happening again and the victim's families and the memory of the victim's themselves (along with the well being of those injured). I mean, again (I say it all the time)-- let's try to keep our eye on the ball people!
So, to answer the question, Yes- NBC should be ashamed b/c they give this whacko exactly what he wanted and he should rot in Hell. People should be striving to be the opposite of him yet the sad part is-- a lot of people will watch that and become MORE like him and that's the most upsetting part.

i was a sicko and felt like i needed to see that video. i honestly thought they weren't going to show the video, but when they did it impacted me in such a way! i felt awful and chills ran through my body. then i could only IMAGINE how the families would react and i felt awful. but it was bound to happen...i think if ABC had gotten the video instead of NBC they would've done the same thing...maybe not, who knows, but what's done is done.
