October 16, 2002 -- Police on Long Island fear they may have a copycat sniper on their hands.
A bullet hit a woman's car as she drove past North Hills on the Long Island Expressway on Sunday night.

At least one of several bullets fired in the single incident continued into a nearby residential area, according to one man, who reported to police he heard a shot whiz over his head as he was getting into his car.

Detectives said it was 'possible' the shooting was the work of a copycat spurred by the deadly rampage in the Washington suburbs, but it was 'too early to tell' for sure.

The unidentified victim, a 56-year-old woman from Commack, told cops she heard four or five loud bangs and felt something hit her BMW sedan as she drove east on the LIE just past Exit 36 at 7:30 p.m., said Nassau County Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone.

Repalone said the sniper may have fired from a wooded area just south of the LIE.

Do you guys rememer the guy who did that about 10 years ago? He shot someone in a Burger Kind located in Stony Brook I believe.

I do remember the guy...it was around '92 or so...a guy in a diner on Jericho Tpke in Smithtown was killed and a guy was hit in a gas stationn also...

I was waitressing at the time on Main St in smithtown where there were big windows and I remember ducking downas I walked past them...very scary....

Hey everyone, be careful up there!

I live in the DC area and it is scary to go outside. I hope they catch this guy soon.
