So - yes, I am officially out of my mind because amongst all of the madness in my life, I got a puppy a few days ago. She is a six month old Yorkie! So cute - but so not potty trained! She is good and has not gone in the crate - yet - however, she doesnt let us know when she needs to go out and keeps pooping on my kitchen floor! Part of me wants to train her to go in a litter box because she is so small and then I dont have to worry about taking her outside in the rain! What do you guys think of this idea and does anyone have any pointers on how to potty train a puppy!? Thanks

Re: NWR - Puppy Help
Dogs usually don't like to make where they sleep-so the crate is a great way to train. You need to introduce her to the crate. Give her treats and praise her for going in. Keep her in there for short times at first-than for longer. Treat her when she's in there for being a good girl. I would take the weekend or a few days where you have off to concentrate on doing it. You should teach her how to go outside too because what happens when your out and she has to go-are you going to bring a litter pan) Good luck

Re: NWR - Puppy Help
hmm i never potty trained a dog in a litter box befor but when FH & I got our puppy she was 9 weeks old. we would take her outside (out the same door) every 2-3 hours and we would say 'do your business' over and over again until she went. then when she went, we would praise her.. like, 'ohhh thats such a good girl! aww your such a good puppy!' and pet her. and act realllll excited about it.
but, make sure you say the same thing everytime you take her out, and make sure to praise her, and dont come in until she goes.
we had her trained in about a week and a half and then she would start going to the door her self.
then the first couple times she went to the door by herself, she wouldnt stay there very long. so the second you see her at the door, make sure you take her out. eventually, she should stay there and wait for you.
