NWR: Qs for people who live/work in NYC

Original post by bluegreen08

DH and I are thinking about moving back to NY --- I have a job offer at a law firm in midtown. I grew up on LI and never lived in the city, and DH has never lived in NY period.

Please tell me what it's like to live in the city (what areas would you recommend? what would an apt there cost? where do you go grocery shopping? do you have a car?)

also, if you work in NYC and live outside of the city where do you live? how long is your commute? How long would the commute be from Queens? Are there nice areas in Queens? how does the rent compare to NYC? how long would our commute be? are the apts bigger?

we're used to living in a pretty spacious 2br and own 2 cars. we also have 2 cats and a lot of crap.

any info you can give me here or via FM would be very useful

yeah by train its a pain. I find the trains a PITA period haha. To bklyn it does take SUCH a long time by train, thats why i havent taken a train to bklyn since i was a teenager, and forget many o f the other places. The only place its easiest to is the city but thats it.

Hmmm probably will take a few more years then, thank you

'09 crashing here....

FH and I lived on the upper east side in NYC for 5 years. I worked in NYC as well, but FH worked in NJ. We loved it, but after 5 years, we nwasnted a bigger place, but ti was way TOO EXPENSIVE.
we loved the upper east side beacuse it was clean, quiet and a great place to be.

what we would be paying for a bigger place we can have a mortgage. things were pricer in NYC than on LI.

we just moved back to LI last month and we are so happy, i'm commuting to the city for work, and it really isn't too bad. my commute is an hr and 5 min door to door...

Just to add...I've seen Novo 64, it just depends if you're a walker or not. Being in the city this entire time, distances doesn't bother me. I wouldn't say it's a hike. It's definitely not across the street of the subway, but it's also not on the other side of town. I know when you drive a car, walking more than a blk. might seem like a lot. Just depends what you want and if a few blks. from the subway is a big deal to you
I did see their floor plans and although it's real nice and modern, seems small and overpriced to me.

i agree, it is WAY overpriced, but all these new buildings going up in queens are so over priced now its ridiculous. I love the pics ive seen of floor plans and all of novo 64 but i definitely think you can get ALOT more for your money elsewhere, ive seen them selling 2 br's for over 1 million, why wouldnt you buy a home for that money rather than a 2br apt. Even other high rise buildings in Forest hills that have been around longer would be a better choice, bigger space and better prices. Or like i mentioned before, going for a pre-war building.

i actually live right down the block from it - what is so funny is that unless they fix up the rest of that parking lot where associated is; i would NEVER pay that price to be on that particular block

they look great in pics but with the homeless people and the bottle deposits; i'd rather spend my money elsewhere

they are doing this everywhere it seems. ITs funny but all of a sudden there are buildings going up everywhere on queens blvd but not inforest hills, down closer to sunnyside. And they are not in the greatest area. First of all they are right in front of the 7 train at queensboro plaza so you have that view. Then theres one luxury building that is right on top of scandals, which is a strip club lol. These are VERY expensive condos. Its funny bc imagine when ppl come visit you and seeing you live on top of a strip club. And ive seen it being done elsewhere too. Its sad bc alot of ppl who dont know the area are buying it without knowing the neighborhood. Plus its one thing in the daytime but at night can be completely different and they wont know how bad it can be until after they move in.

i mean, dont get me wrong; its a great neighborhood and i do love it
but with associated RIGHT there; i'd have to look elsewhere

day or night; its a great place to be and VERY safe which is why even though we are still in a 1br; we are staying for now

4 months until baby arrives and hopefully get a bigger place

yeah its very true. Ive been seeing associated closing in other neighborhoods and putting other supermarkets in their place so wonder if that would happen anytime soon.

awww wow so soon

We live in NYC on the UES and we're pay about 2k for a 1 br. Very small but it's rent stablized and we'll stay here until we buy a place. we're looking in brooklyn to buy. We were on the Williamsburg kick for awhile but we're going to check out other neighborhoods.

We do have a car in the city that we park down in Murray Hill because it's close to our office and easy for us to leave after work to go down to our beach house. It's one of the cheapest spots in the city. Under 300 a month.
