Hello! Thanks for reading. We will be moving to west nassau/Queens...in less than a year from now. I will be attending Queens college to finish up my bach in accounting! We are NOT familiar at all with Queens and we are hoping to get some advice on nice but somewhat 'reasonable' areas to live. Preferably a hi rise building or a complex. If anyone knows of any please let me know. I appreciate it! Thanks so much! Oh and What towns are good?

Re: NWR: Queens Girlies! I have questions!
I grew up in Elmont & Valley Stream (West Nassau) so I wouldn't suggest those for a nice place to live But we just moved out to Kew Gardens earlier in the year and we LOVE LOVE LOVE it! The neighborhood is quiet and everything is a step away.

Just FYI
I teach at Queens College, there is no subway that goes there, only busses. Its a real hassle during rush hours 3pm-5pm.
Driviing is fine, if you can get a student parking pass, and I've heard a lot of students complain that its difficult to get them for some reason. Otherwise parking on the street is tormentful on the weekdays.
Thanks girls!
I actually did hear about this!!!! I will be taking weekend and night classes only...so hopefully this helps! I honestly didnt want to have to drive AT all...buses are still an option I guess
Thanks for the heads up about rush hour!!! I really do appreciate it! Ill def keep it in mind when I figure out my schedual.
night classes are very very very popular, parking gets a bit tricky then too.
Weekends, Queens College is a ghosttown. Its actually kind of nice, and the meter parking is free around there sundays and saturdays.
I graduated with a BA in 1998 and then MSEd from Queens College in 2003 and I'll vouch for the lousy parking situation and waiting for buses!!! I don't know if it still exists, but there used to be a parking garage underneath the Student Union. Since I graduated QC, the Union has been totally renovated so I'm not sure if the garage was redone or taken away. And yes, I agree about QC being a ghosttown on weekends. I used to be editor of the paper, so I'd go in to finish putting the paper to bed on Sat/Sun, and NO ONE was around! My friend & I had the whole Union to ourselves!
As for neighborhoods to live in Queens, there are many high-rises in Rego Park, a nice area w/ lots of buses, trains and shopping, banks, libraries, etc..... the downside is the parking is minimal and metered, and the apts cost more than some other neighborhoods.
We're in Briarwood now, beautiful neighborhood, some high-rise bldgs (ours is a 7-story bldg, pet friendly although I'm allergic). We're near the E & F trains
Forest Hills is a great area, but is more expensive than some other areas. Lots of good shopping areas, a major headache traffic and parking-wise near Austin St & Continental Ave, though.
I grew up in a house in Middle Village, and it's mostly attached row houses and some 2-3 family houses, not many high-rises at all, but going towards Rego Park, there's an area on Dry Harbor Road & Woodhaven Blvd that has a lot of high-rise apt bldgs. I lived on Dry Harbor in a shorter bldg, and it's a really nice tree-lined, 1-2 family homes neighborhood.
Sometimes w/ Queens, you'll find we call ourselves a 'two-fare zone'...... meaning you have to take a bus to get to a subway station, no way around it. Not fun in the dead of winter when 5 crowded buses pass you by in snowstorm. But if you have a car, you may either be fighting for parking or moving your car for alternate-side of the street parking days. Here in Briarwood, we have alternate side on Wed & Thurs.
A co-worker of mine just moved to a brand new bldg (not sure if condo or co-op, can't remember), and she's in Long Island City. She's paying $$ because of the area being 'up & coming.' Between LIC and Astoria, you may pay more because you're so close to the trains and Manhattan. But the area is saturated with great shopping and fantastic local take-out places with every ethnic food you can imagine!
ETA: My sister is in a complex in Fresh Meadows near Kew Gardens. It's a duplex (2 floors) and set up like garden apts. Not far from QC too!
Thanks!!! I was hoping to give up my car and do everything by public transportation. What is the area closest to Queens college ( flushing ) that is best for this option. Sorry...I have no idea and this is helping me so much!

Closest to Queens College would probaly be the Kissena Park area of Flushing...its a nice area...I dont know too much about rentals there but Id look up craigslist and get the names of some real estate brokers in that area HTH

I'm lousy w/ directions and such, but I'll try to help. Queens College is located in Flushing, that's its zip code. The cross streets for the main campus entrance are Kissena Blvd and the service road of the LIE (Horace Harding Expwy) near at Exit 24. Kew Gardens is not far away from there, as is Briarwood, where I am now. I knew a lot of people from Forest Hills who came to QC. And of course, my tired brain can't think of the other surrounding neighborhoods at the moment without looking at a map!

Re: NWR: Queens Girlies! I have questions!
FH lived in Floral Park (queens side) and he attended Queens College. At the time he didn't drive he only walked or used public transportation. You will definately need to keep a car but you'd definately be able to get away with only one. New Hyde Park is also very nice and borders Floral Park but is in nassau. It's close to the family you will have in the area and about 35-40 minutes (depending on traffic) from the family you have here. I always loved haning out in Bayside. If you like a more urban feel you'd like bayside but it's pricier. If you want, give me a call. We can get together and chat and you can pick FHs brain and ask him about the areas.

Re: NWR: Queens Girlies! I have questions!
the area is called flushing BUT flushing is big so you have to pay attention to what part it is if you look up listings. Some parts are better than others so look for areas near kissena blvd exit, ask realtors specifically for an area near queens college. Bayside is not far either, neither is fresh meadows. Forest hills and kew gardens is not THAT far like mentioned, but just dont know how long the bus ride is or how many buses you have to take. I take the trains not bus, and it S*CKS bc you cant take a train to QC, if you do you have to transfer somewhere for the bus.
you said youre going to take public transportation so although astoria has been mentioned-STAY AWAY its a horrible commute to QC

DH's best friend & grandmother live in the Georgetown Co-ops across the street from QC. You don't have to buy, you can rent there also.
