Okay I received a commencement announcement in the mail.... no invite... so when I send the check do i write 'Sorry I couldn't attend' since I wasn't invited to anything? How do I word this?

Depends how close you are. I've received these before and sent nothing, because it was a co-worker looking for free $. If it's someone close, send congrats. No need to mention you weren't invited. You never know if there was actually something to be invited to.
