NWR: Question for Nassau Girls

NWR: Question for Nassau Girls

After speaking w/ hubby earlier, there's a potential we might look into Nassau for a home, depending on location, price, etc. We don't know much about Nassau. So I figured we'd ask you...

What are areas in Nassau that are:

1) Real close to LIRR - and about 15-25 minutes to get into the city
2) Have real nice homes and great neighborhoods
3) Great school districts
TIA!

I don't know too much about Nassau, but I used to intern in Great Neck (that was such a hike for me! Haha) and the area was great. I actually really liked it. And it's close to the city!

The only thing I'm unsure of is the school districts...but it's a very nice area so I would assume the schools are good too?

We wanted to live in the city, but refused to rent so we actually bought in Great Neck. It's a nice little town with 3-4 blocks of stores, restaurants and whatnot. The rush hour commute is 25 minutes. The homes in Great Neck are really pricey, though, so we got a condo. A more reasonably priced area is Little Neck, which is 1 town closer to the city along the same line.

When we are ready to buy a home, we'll likely buy in Port Washington. It is such a NICE quaint little town right on the water. It's a solid 30 min rush hour ride, but you can find a varied price range there, too.

Definitely Port Washington!!! So much to do there and the commute to the city is short!

not sure what you're price range is like but my suggestions are as follows:

- mineola, new hyde park - try to stay in herricks, new hyde park memorial, great neck south SD districts (about 30 mins to penn)
- if you can afford it, my vote goes to manhasset/great neck - it's like 25 mins to the city and it's on a line that doesnt stop at jamaica so it's almost never delayed - just be careful because there are some 'sketchy' areas
- i grew up in williston park which is part of the herricks SD and it is great there but might a. be out of your price range or b. be too far from the city (about 35 mins)

Thanks lady! Ideally, we want to spend less if we do consider LI, but I'm not sure if that's possible while still having a good commute...Sigh.

Rockville Centre is nice if you want the south shore....the SD is good too. RVC is the Babylon branch of the LIRR and it will go through Jamaica.

Def. look into Oceanside. I've lived here all my life, the schools are excellent and the town is very safe, and there is great shopping here!
The train ride is a little bit longer than what you are looking for, about 45 mins express to Manhattan, but you are living 10 minutes away from Long Beach. Can't get any better than that!

i would say oceanside, Rockville Center. Bellmore/Merrick is really nice too. that is where i grew up, the houses are reasonably priced great school districts but it is more like 45min from NYC by train. But its literally 5 minutes from train station.

Yep this....and add baldwin and lynbrook to that list. Even parts of valley stream are great and one of the schools is really great in valley stream (they have a few)....and they are all on the babylon line and quick to get into the city on the lirr. And an easy drive to the highways as well.

I'm from Bellmore, its on the Babylon train line which is one of the most reliable and easier train lines of LIRR, you don’t have to switch at Jamaica to get there! I really loved growing up there

New Hyde Park - Memorial High School

Mineola, East Williston, Williston Park - Herricks or East Williston Schools

Floral Park - Floral Park High School

All of this neighborhoods are relatively expensive and you don't get a lot for your money. Just bought a house in July, message me if you have any questions!

Hey Girl -

If you're still in a rut - send me a FM, as I can tell you about the schools from a teacher's perspective.

I personally worked in the Great Neck school district - so I have first hand there.

Some districts I'd look at - commute is more than what you're saying are - Manhasset School District, Roslyn School District, East Willison School District - Herricks School District

On the south shore - Merrick, wantagh, massapequa, oceanside, bellmore, rockville center *although you have to be careful in RVC some parts are closer to sketcy areas *

Re: NWR: Question for Nassau Girls

Im in Westbury now renting and we've been looking online. Two things to bear in mind are taxes! Sometimes they are sky high. Also, There are express trains that are about 30 mins from Mineola, I used to rent over there and its an easy train ride. Sometimes you find an affordable house and then once you figure the taxes into it it becomes over budget.

I third these recommendations. Oceanside is really nice and great place to raise a family.
