NWR: Question for Special Ed Teachers!

Hi- I am thinking about going back to get a 2nd masters in Special Education. (I have a masters in school counseling but was unable to find a job anywhere because it's so tough.) Anyway- I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on where they got their masters? did you have a hard time finding a job? what kind of special ed do you teach? TIA!!!

My sister has 2 masters as well, one in elementary education and her second in special ed which she just finished in May. She went to Lehman for her special ed masters. She already had her job teaching at a public school in the Bronx when she decided to get the 2nd one, so I can't really answer the part about how hard it is to find a job. She teaches Kindergarten Special ed and she absolutely loves it because she can get to the kids early and really help them in the formative years. HTH!

You should have absolutely NO problem finding a job unless you are only considering one district or so. If so, you might look at districts near you and see what type of openings they have. I don't know if you have any interest in working in the city but they often have grants for masters if you committ to 2 years teaching in NYC.

The NYC teaching fellows program has a Spec Ed program. They pay for your masters and you teach in the city until the masters is completed. About 2-3 years.

I have a dual certification in Elementary/Special Ed. and a Masters in Early Childhood Ed. from Queens College. I teach in a 12:1 sp. ed class in Bayside-i LOVE my school and my class. My kids are great and I love my job but you really have to want to be a special ed, teacher to do the job!!
Good Luck!

Thank you all so much for answering my questions! I am definitely interested in teaching special ed but it's really nice to get some insight from teachers before I decide to go through with the masters.
