NWR: question for teachers

i know that none of you WANTS a gift from your students, but what if a parent wants to show appreciation?

would a gift card to an office supply store be an appropriate gift?

thoughtful and useful are always best. i like that idea. one year a parent gave me a gift card for a restaurant (chinese buffet) for me and my fi to spend time together. she said, if she gave me cash it would have gone right back to the kids..and she was right, it would have.

As a teacher, I always appreciate gifts from students... but it's extra great if it's something that i can use.... i have too many #1 teacher mugs. ;) if you're going to give something, gift cards always go down well! i appreciate ones to:

staples, office depot, etc. we spend a lot of our own money on supplies and things for the kids so anything to help with that is awesome.

starbucks, dunkin' donuts, 7/11.... gotta have the coffee in the morning! which ever one of these that is closest to your child's school is extra nice because she can grab a cup of coffee on her way in the mornings...

gift cards to restaurants, the movies, anything like that is great too!

I agree....gift cards are the best!

I've gotten them for amex, target, simon mall, etc.

The more options you have to spend it at, the better!

Re: NWR: question for teachers

The gifts I recieved last year were nice trinkets and such:
~a pillow that says 'teachers touch lives forever'
~a glass vase
~#1 teacher ornament
~ student gave me her handmade pot from Art class (and that was the most touching gift of all)

I would have loved a GC for a restaurant but most of my students/parents cant afford anything to begin with so I love whatever I get ...even the handmade cards

Gift cards are great! I love getting them to places like Staples, Borders Books and Music and places where I can get my much needed cups of coffee..like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts! Not that I don't love the other gifts students give, but how many mugs and picture frames can one person use?

I would check with your district. In my district we can't accept ANY gifts.

Re: NWR: question for teachers

a lot of my kids last year in my morning classes got my gift cards to starbucks bc I always used to joke around with them that I was not a morning person and I needed at least 3 cups of coffee to wake up and joke around with them- so not only was it useful, but the kids paid attention to me and were very thoughtful!

Gift certificate to starbucks, restaurants (though they may not live local) a local restaurant place like Panera for lunch.. were always buying tons of school supplies etc..

One class parent actually put their money together and got a teacher a massage once (though not everyone likes them)

Good Luck :)

giftcard to Staples or Barnes and Noble or something like that would probably be the most appreciated - something useful like that. Otherwise you're pretty much down to really generic gifts like candy or soaps or something (if it's a woman... I wouldn't even know what to look for with a man), which are most often tossed in a cupboard and ignored for years.

Although, I wonder, can public school teachers even accept gifts from students? It wouldn't be seen as a bribe or something?

I'm a first year teacher, and I went to a private school, so I know we always gave teachers gifts at my private school, but I wonder if it's different at public schools...
