NWR: Question for teachers

NWR: Question for teachers

Since I'm going to be teaching for the very first time this coming school year I need some advice. I am going to have to cover 13 chapters throughout the school year and have no idea how to pace myself. I'll be teaching social studies and each chapter is split into 4 short sections. I don't want to go too slow but I don't want to go super fast.

Any suggestions?

i'm a bio teacher so i really cant help....but make friends with another teacher teaching the same subject as you and ask if you could plan together....you should also get a mentor (NYS requirement) that will be in your dept that can help you also

Most schools will usually give you a pacing guide. But if this is not the case in your school try to make a pacing guide for yourself, dont go crazy or anything. Just what material you want or need to teach by a specific date. I would do one for each month. So that way you know by the end of each month you should have covered a certain amount of topics in that subject area. Don't go crazy, I had a pacing guide and if I didnt cover certain things by the end of the month I would integrate them somehow with another lesson. In my opinion ,I'd rather my students deeply comprehend 10 chapters than just know the surface of 15 chapters ....hope I didn't ramble... good luck to you!...

thanks, I'm going to set a pacing schedule for myself bc the school really leaves it up to me as long as I get to the 13 chapters.

AS you read the textbook you'll see there are sections that are better explained in other ways and you'll get through them faster that way. If you have a projector in your room, ask your principal if your school has an account on United Streaming. It's an amazing SS resource!

I would ask your fellow teachers about pacing.... I am sure the vets have a schedule as to when each chapter needs to be covered and done. Don't be afraid to ask other teachers!

Usually a 4 section chapter could take you 2-3 weeks or 5 days...Usually in the beginning of the teachers addition there is a planning schedule... if not once you start teaching you will see how fast or slow the students are getting the material... also dont forget you will probably have them taking notes and writing and doing activities... 13 chapters sometimes doesnt even get covered in by June.... Pace yourself.... HTH
