NWR: Question for teachers....

NWR: Question for teachers....

Say I have an undergrad in History and then will be finishing an MBA this spring. If I went and got a second bachelors in Secondary Ed would I still need to get a masters to keep my certification or would my MBA count?

Ideally I would be able to find a Masters in Secondary Ed but I was wondering what the siutaion was if I just got a second BA instead...

Re: NWR: Question for teachers....

Masters of Science programs are for noncertified teachers and they're shorter than BA programs so I'd just do that (that's what I'm doing). I'm not really sure what you mean by keeping your certification...I don't think you HAVE to have a Master's to continue being certified you just have to be teaching...

I don't get why you would get your BA in Secondary Ed instead of your MS?

I am a teacher. My BA is in English. My MS is in Math Secondary Education (Certified Math and ELA).

It would be a waste of TIME and MONEY to go for your BA in Education, instead of your MS. You don't need a BA in Education.

Because I don't know if want to teach History,,, if I do a different subject I can't just get a masters in secondary ed Math or whatever unless I have a certain number of undergrad credits anyway....

I'm about 99% positive you need a masters after you get your undergrad in education. It's the only reason my sister is even going for her masters. I think she had something like 5 years to do it in. But if you get a masters in Secondary Ed then obviously you wouldn't need to.

If you have a MS in Education, you can teach something else if you have enough credits. Like I did. BA in English. MS in Math Secondary Education.

You could do MS in Special Education (def a good thing to have. History will be hard to get a job). I wouldn't do another BA though. It isn't worth the time and money IMO. Good luck!

Yeah I would only have enough credit in history... maaaaybe business but I don't even know if that is an option...

Can I do History and Special Ed? I was thinking of applying at Old Westbury... I've given Dowling enough of my money.

But you can take a few extra classes to make that up. You could do CLEP exams. They are like $45 and you get 3-6 credits in different subjects. You take a Math exam. They have study books. It would save you time and money.

Would you be interested in Special Ed?

I think so. Check out the program requirements. You could do an alternative program like I did. NYCTF. It's hard to get in, but it's worth a shot. You can only get accepted if you don't have your undergrad in Education. They PAY for your masters. You can work in Queens. You pick the school you work for and you take grad classes while teaching. They would hire you for special ed!!!

Or take the credits that you are lacking in math, science, etc.

I'm 99% sure you can a MS in Secondary Ed/Special Education. SO you could teach History or Special Education.

Special Ed wouldn't be my first choice but from everything I have heard it's your best shot of getting a job... I love History but I know it would be tough to get a job in so that is why I was thinking of doing Science.

Science is good too. Look into alternative programs (like NYCTF), or taking science CLEP tests to make up your missing credits. I wouldn't recommend getting another BA though! Good luck

Re: NWR: Question for teachers....

I did NYCTF too...I don't know how many history people they're taking right now--when I started the program (4 years ago--yikes!), they only had 15 history people in the whole program, and I know they took less the following year. That being said, they're ALWAYS looking for math people (and they may take you with just your MBA). I know some people went from business to math and just had to take some extra math classes on top of their education classes.

If you do want to go the traditional route, I'd recommend doing an MS in Special Ed. You could still teach history regular ed, but you'd be more likely to get a job with the special ed as well (even if it was as a team teacher).

HTH! Feel free to FM if you have more questions!

I did it 4 years ago too! Which school did you go to? I went to St John's for math. :)

I was at Fordham for English--I don't even think they have the secondary English program anymore! I got in just in time! I know people complain about the NYCTF a lot, but I LOVED my experience!

Re: NWR: Question for teachers....

gina-yayyy!!!

i would just get an ma in secondary ed with a concentration in special ed and history..i think there actually is a cert. that you can teach business classes too-i know we always had business teachers in my school...

and you do need a masters to keep your cert, but you have 5 years after you get your initial cert. to get your ma..honestly i wouldn't bother with an ms because ive heard the classes are harder

ps-i still have every single textbook i had to use in education classes

if you want to completely change, i believe you can with 30 credits in the content area-for a short time i considered going back to get certified in psych.

St. John's also offers an accelerated master's program for career change people but it's expensive. Touro also has something similar. I believe in NY to teach in a public school you now have to get your master's. I could be wrong though..

And yes you need a Master's to teach in NY. You have 5 years to get one after you have your initial certification.

You need a masters degree in an education field, so ur best bet is to get ur masters in secondary education.
