NWR - Question for those with a dog???

Original post by NC1011

I was hoping that I could get some feedback.

FH and I both had dogs in our families, although mine passed away in the spring We both decided that we were not going to have any pets because we didnt want to be tied down. We always stop in the pet shops now and then though just to look at the puppies and then we leave knowing that we don't want to buy one.

Well...........yesterday I FELL IN LOVE with this adorable puggle (which is what I want, besides a boxer but they get SOO big). She was the perfect mix and SOO cute and playful. We played with her for 20 minutes and I just really really really wanted to take her home with us. FH said No because he thinks that its a huge commitment and that we will lose our freedom before we have kids. I feel as though it's tough the first few months with training and whatnot, but afterwards, you get into a routine.
I have not been able to stop thinking about it since we left yesterday and it's making me so sad. I keep on bringing it up with FH and he just laughs and says that its not a good time. I have never gotten this way before about having a pet, but this time I think I really want her.

For those of you who have or have had a dog, do you feel as though having a pet ties you down??

Thanks for your help

i actually like getting dogs from pet stores for the mere fact of everything u just said....i feel like i'm rescueing them. the place where i got my teacup chihauha was so entirely shady....and that's why when i fell in love with the dog, i was like 'I am getting him OUT OF HERE.' poor things... it's not the puppy's fault that it was bred in a mill...jmo.

The problem with this is that now you just supported the puppy mill, and now they have your money and the 'demand' for puppies. What this means is now they feel the need to breed even more puppies. If people would stop buying the dogs, they would stop breeding they dogs. If people keep buying these dogs to 'rescue them' they are actually helping the business.

One of my friends used to work for a large puppy store on LI. They actually tried to make puppies look miserable so they would get (what they called) suckers to buy the puppies. She also told me how if they ran out of a type of dog, and someone came in saying they were looking for a, puggle, per say they would just grab any dog that kinda looked like what the people were looking for and pass it off as such.

It is true that it is not the puppies fault, however the cycle will never ever end if people keep doing this.

i do understand where u are coming from & i respect ur opinions & ideas, but in reality - there IS money in the puppy & pet business...and the end of puppy stores is nowhere near their end. if i don't buy a puppy - the next person will. but whatever - i heart my chihauha & there was no way in hell i was letting the poor little innocent pup stay in the place that he was...regardless if i was 'supporting puppy mills' or not...imo - rescueing is rescuing if u're taking an animal out of a place where they aren't getting proper care...i didn't meant to start any sort of debate...it's just my opinion.

Sorry again I dont want to start a debate either, however you have to understand, I have seen the after math of these facilities with my own eyes and being that I work in a real rescue, when people say that they rescued an animal from a pet shop it is one of my biggest pet peeves. Nothing against you, alot of people feel this way which is why the fight to close these places down is so hard. But if someone comes in asking advice I will fight tooth and nail to try to sway them away from supporting the industry. Im not trying to say your dog was not worth it, cause you were one of the lucky ones. My neighbor bought a puggle from a store for her 5 year old last christmas only to have it die a week later from parvo.. The store response was 'well we can give you another puppy' They could care less the puppy was dead or for the heartbroken kid.. You should read the article I posted as well.. It also has a section on the 'rescue from petstores' point of view.

But to the original poster, if you want a puppy go to a breeder.. If you dont care about saving dogs lives at least youll save lots of money.

believe me i KNOW. u're talking as if i didn't know any of this and i DO. The people i got my dog from were entirely insensitive...in fact the first dog i picked out(as a x-mas present) turned out to be sick...and the shop called me the night before new years eve and said 'ur puppy is sick with such & such...its not healthy enough to be in a home yet so u need to come pick out another one'...i still offered to take the puppy and nurse it back to health but they refused & said they had to keep it in their on-site nursing facility..which might've been the truth but who knows what they did..i was heartbroken....so BELIEVE ME, i know how ridiculous they are and how hanous they are... all i was trying to say was that i love my dog and i was glad to get him out of there while i could. i'm an avid dog lover & i completely understand u & respect everything ur saying...i actually just signed up to be a volunteer at the new aspca rescue facility in manhattan....i was just trying to state that i'm in love with my dog, and lord knows what would've happen to him had i left him in that place.

Again I am sorry, I was not trying to attack you or say anything about your dog cause im sure its a wonderful dog. And I am glad you are volunteering at a rescue, its very time consuming but a completely rewarding experience. I still cry everytime one of our babies get a forever home. I get very attached to them, especially knowing where they came from.

We have a mammoth of a dog lol.. BUT let me tell you she is the best thing ever. I have always had a dog when I lived alone. I had a pit before her and while she is SUPER needy I can not even imagine life without her.....

I wouldnt say that she ties me down.. it does make life difficult at times BUT i would not change my life for anything.....

Re: NWR - Question for those with a dog???

I'm with you.. I want a dog SOOOO bad, but FH is worried that we'll have to give up our love of travel b/c we have this puppy at home that needs us.

With that being said, despite the fact that the 2 of us are huge animal lovers, and have dogs at our parents houses, we decided to hold out on getting 1 of our own until we have a yard for them to run, play and go potty.

I'm not overly thrilled about the decision, but I guess FH is right.

Not to start trouble, but that is a ridiculous comment. The only thing you are doing by buying a pet store dog is perpetuating the disgusting business that are puppy mills. If you want to really rescue a dog, go to any shelter or humane recscue. Thousands of animals are put down everyday because they are not enough homes. Now that is rescuing

Re: NWR - Question for those with a dog???

We got our dog from this POS in shirley.... I never have adopted anything other then a shelter dog.. I went to the house where my puppy was and it was a rescue mission.... I just found out that my pup is the only one that survived that litter. Makes me want to go to that guys house and gut him like a fish.......Keep in mind our pup had worms for the first 2 months of her life....

are we going to cover this again??? i'm sorry u didn't read further down this thread at the rest of my comments. I didn't mean to 'cause all of this lol. i was just stating my experience. i'm not for drama on these boards AT ALL...so i'm sorry but saying anyones comment in a public forum 'is a ridiculous comment' is a little harsh...it would be nice if u used kinder words while considering other peoples opinions...u could've simply said u disagreed..and read further down the thread please. i'm not FOR puppy mills or anything of the sort.... all i said was i bought my dog from a pet store & love him to death, and it's not the innocent puppy's fault that they ended up in such a place.

Re: NWR - Question for those with a dog???

I use to think the same the about dogs. I thoughts that if I had a dog it would stop me from doing many things. When I met my FH he had a Boxer named Champ. I really never wanted a dog for the reason your FH is saying, but oh my God, Champ is now the love of my live. He is such a mommy's boy and by no means do I feel tied down. I love spending time with him. Like many other said, the only time we have a problem is when we travel, but we do not do that a lot since my FH owns a business.

We even had him in our e-pictures!

Re: NWR - Question for those with a dog???

Thank you all for your feedback and opinions. I read everyones comments very carefully and I felt everyone had valid and useful information to share. I'm sorry if it got a little bit political, I didnt mean for that, but I really do appreciate you all sharing your experiences with me.

I do agree that a breeder is probably the best way to go. However, both mine and FH's family dogs came from pet stores and they turned out to be great dogs. Maybe we got lucky. My dog Sandy who passed away at 12, had to be THE greatest dog in the world. I swear she had some personality on her. We were all heartbroken when she died suddenly of heart failure. I think part of the problem for me is that I was the one who found her lying there breathing funny and I rushed her to the nearest 24 hour hospital but I didnt get there fast enough and she died 30 seconds after I got her there. It was so terrible and I decided right there that I didnt want to ever go through that again. But I do miss that companionship and that friendly greeting everytime I walk in the door.
I guess me and FH still have a few things to think about before making this decision.

Thanks again everyone for all of your help
