NWR: Raises

NWR: Raises

So I am pretty bummed, I though I would receive a raise this year as but I didn't. I know for a fact that some another peer of mine received one and I have no idea what I should do. This is my first time in this position and I don't know if I shouldn't inquire about it. Any thoughts or advice? Thank you.

I think it couldn't hurt to set some time with your manager to discuss it

oh, definitely could not hurt! Just mention you were curious how the raises work and are given being that you've been the your current position for 'x' amount of time.

I would find out. I quit one of my jobs years ago since I was too chicken to ask. Looking back, I think I should have said something

Yea I would just ask. Don't bring up how you know others got a raise but you did not. Just say, 'Hi I was wondering about my review and raise.' Something like that.

yes, it doen't hurt to ask at all. you really have nothing to lose. i'm actually somewhat in the same boat because i'm not sure if i'm eligable for one or not this year.

Re: NWR: Raises

I got many a raise by asking for one. A few tips:

Document your accomplishments. If you save the company money... but it in terms of dollars and cents. Companies love to see increased profits. If you won any awards or special recognition.

Sell your strengths. Everything you do well to keep your department more organized, etc.

DO NOT COUNTER OFFER OR THREATEN TO QUIT. Most times, they'll let you go, because they can hire a replacement for less than you're making. It only works in rare circumstances.

If you're going for a degree mention it. The first raise I ever got while asking was when my boss asked me why I was going back to school: my answer was: Well, I don't want to be doing X for the rest of my life, I'm trying to increase my marketability to become a bigger asset to the company'.

Others are right, don't mention that you know Bob got a raise and you didn't, that sounds like sour grapes and will get you nowhere.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Re: NWR: Raises

Thanks a bunch girls for all of your advice. These are lessons that I must learn now in order to become successful. Oh and the fact I knew other ppl got raised I just threw in so that you guys knew that. So I finally got enough courage to ask how a person were to go about getting a raise and she said all you have to do is tell me how much and why and that she would speak to the President. I felt so relived and so accomplished for having even been in that situation. I have friends who still have never had a job and I am lucky to have one in which I am working my up. The reason why i guess it was so difficult at first is because my boss and I are really close. A raise for me would be an incentive to keep on working passionetly and diligently. Thanks for all of your encouragement it REALLY helped me today.

And Joann thank you, as a young women I appreciate a successful woman as yourself taking the time to share positive feedback and advice. It means a lot to me!
