Ugh, please, I can use some help. I have to transfer my driver's License and car resigration from CA to NY.
Ifor the dl, think I've finally figured out all the proof I need so they know i'm really me . But I have one question... on the application they ask if you have had a NYS drivers license. Now, I DID, back in high school, so should I say yes? Reason being is they ask for the DL number, which I don't know. Does that just mean a RECENT license?
But my biggest question is registration my car. The question: HOW????? The website is so confusing. It says I need Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statements (will this be on the bill from the place I bought it from? I bought it 3.5 years ago).
And it says I need a NYS insurance card - am I supposed to get that BEFORE I register it? If so can I get that like, today? Tomorrow's my only chance to go, since the DMV has horrible hours, and with my work schedule I can't just go. How can they give me insurance w/o having a NYS car?
THEN it says this: 'If you were not a resident of NYS when the vehicle was purchased, use form DTF-803 to receive a non-resident exemption from NYS sales tax.' What does this have to do w/changing the registration? There's no sales tax involved.
At least the drivers license has a clear cut out of state section (as clear cut as they can be) but the registration is all lumped together.
Someone help.... I'm going out of my mind :( :( :(

Get your insurance card before you register it...
What form are you filling out? You should just be using the MV-82. There isn't a place for the odometer reading or damage disclosure. You must be using the wrong form.
I hadn't even worked myself up to looking at the form lol I just read all the info on the web site. It said I needed all that stuff. The form doesn't look so bad though, thank you.

I don't know about the driver license, but all you need is the MV-82 to register your car... I fill it out all day long!! If you need any help with it - feel free to FM me.

Ok, for the NYS license question, you can put yes-when it asked for the number just put NA...you DID have one but dont anymore so obviously you cant give them the number.
For the insurance card have you transferred your insurance over? If so call the closest office for that company and ask if you can pick one up or if they can send you proof of insurance with the card...usually they can do this via Fax
if you cant figure it out-leave it alone-go to the DMV, when you get to the girl on the line she will give you the proper forms to fill out and just fill them out the best that you can, then when they call your number the girl there can help you with the rest of the application

as for the sales tax. In NYS the sales tax must be paid before registerign the car. But you paid sales tax back in CA when you bought it so you do not have to pay it here. It is a form that you will have to fill out just so they know you didnt buy the car here in NY and are tryign to avoid NYS sales tax. I was just at DMV today registering a car. Just show up and they will tell you exactly what forms you need. Bring your old license, the old car regiastration and you NYS insurance card. ( the insurance co can fax it to you)

Thanks ladies. I have an e-mail in to the insurance co, hopefully they'll be able to just change it over today.
I'll just go and ask about the car... Honestly, I'm just afraid that the people who work there will be mean and rude. Stereotypical, i know, but I am so stressed over this already that I don't want to start crying there in the office!

ThANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP... (oops, caps sorry) Turns out that they need a birth certificate too Apparently all my other proof that has my DOB on it isn't enough. i SWEAR it's not on the part of the site that I was reading. And the insurance guy called but didn't e-mail so I missed talking to him yesterday. So no NY insurance, no NYS license.
And seeing as how the DMV is only open 8:30 to 4 weekdays, i doubt I'll have a chance to get back there any time soon
At least I tried. And the lady at the front desk was super nice.

Which DMV are you going to? I believe most are open late on Thursdays.

Yes most have 1 day that they are open later, you can call and find out when the one you are going to is open late

Yeah, a few in my county are open 'til 6. I get home at 6:30. Port Jeff is open until 7, but it's 45 mins away from here. It's my stupid schedule as much as it them for having horrible hours.
