My FH and I found a beautiful apartment here in Queens. It's 2 bed, 2 bath, EIK and large living room for 1300 / month. This place is in the first floor of a three-family house.
We fell in love with the place and had the lease in our hands until I heard the neighbor's dog next door howling tonight. Another turnoff is that the landlords live upstairs and have a 3 yr. old baby boy that runs around the house all the time. Turn off #3 is that the landlord's family doesn't speak english. Only chinese.
My FH loved the place and already paid commission to the broker for this place; but after tonight with all the noise and confusion, I just couldn't go through with it. So after fighting with my FH, we decided not to take the place.
Did I do the right thing? This place is gorgeous... it's in a brand new building. But I just couldn't deal with all of that stuff.
What do you think?

Again, I think you made the right decision... I could never live with noise... Personally I have found that if a dog is howling all night he will probably do that every night... I cant stand that.. Did the owners leave him outside?

You and your FH did exactly what we would have done. We currently live on the first floor of a three family house and find it to be....crazy sometimes. Especially because we're very quiet people. Currently we've got a wonderful older woman downstairs...she's great! Before her was a guy who would play his electric guitar full blast and smoke all day (which no smoking is on the lease...). AND no one upstairs! Our landlord has had many offers, but he's looking for the right match...someone without young children and without dogs....
You did the right thing. I also think you are entitled to get some of the commission back from the broker! JMOb

you did the right thing! you would regret it for the next year being stuck in an apartment where you couldn't get a good nights sleep

Thanks for your support. I posted this also on NWR board. I was able to get out of the lease and got back half of the commission.
So I'm relieved and thankful everything turned out ok. I was just so worried, since I don't know how all these things work.
Thanks again!

OMG YES, you made the right decision. The tenants who live upstairs from us have a 3 year old boy and he wakes me up constantly!!! Last week, he and his cousin were riding their scooters in the kitchen! I have to deal with this crap because they pay my mother rent...I definetely would not PAY to hear it!
