NWR: Repost from 07 - Costco Shockers!!

I went to have dinner with my friends last night and this is what I found out! Since he's the supervisor of Costco in Garden City area, he was telling me about all the returns that goes on in Costco. So, supposedly, if you keep your receipts, you can return items from Costco from years and years before. He had customers return camcorders that was purchased 5 years ago, mattresses, furniture and even dairy products. He has had customers return a quater gallon of milk left for refund of one quarter of the cost. People bought cake and return the cake with only 1 slice left, claiming the cake was not good!!!
Am I the only one who apparently didn't know this about Costco's return policy? It kind of makes me nervous about purchasing items from there!!!

People are scammers but what can ya do. They stuff never went back on the shelf or anything so I wouldn't worry.

i totally beleive it! people are scammers- my sister used to work at BBB, and she said you wouldn't beleive the things people would bring back.
my parents own a garden center, and people will buy these gorgeous hanging baskets in may (now, mind you this is how my parents make their living, so my dad is NUTS about making sure the plants he sells are healthy and nice), and they'll take it home, not water it for a month and bring it back at the end of june like ' you sold me a bad plant'. um... no, you just forgot to take care of it!
so, yeah, its funny what people will do....

I think that Costco has changed their policy for electronics (computers, camera's, etc.) to 3 mos...

I used to work at Sterns department store, and we would accept anything as a return - I had people return totally worn, dirty, old shoes (that looked like the were worn everyday for 2 years). It was nasty, but we had to take em back.

I used to work at the Express in college and it was the same way. People would bring back acid washed jeans from the 80's and we'd take them. One time someone returned a calendar from 1991! It cost only 2.50 but they wanted their money back.

I worked at Nordstrom in the lingerie department and people would return worn underwear and white bras that were now yellow. I would put on rubber gloves and stuff them in a bag. How disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it stinks that people are returning 1/4 of a gallon of milk...but this 'policy' came in handy for me one day....i purchased some romaine lettuce for a salad....when i got it home and opened the package, all 3 of the 'hearts' were horribly wilted...something i wouldn't have known...i returned to the store and returned the wilted stuff and got something else....otherwise no diinner that night....i learned of this b/c FMIL has a friend who will return produce that 'turns' within a day or two all the time, when most of us say, oh well, that's $4 i'll never see again.

she's borderline scammer, but hey, my fresh food should last longer than 48 hours! (or the 20 minute drive home)

Same with me: I used to work at a Supermarket in High School and we used to get things that were eaten and people would return the wrappers/cases. Or we would get things that they left out and spoiled but they would return it. The one saving grace: we never put ANYTHING back on the shelf (even if people bought the wrong brand of something and it was still perfectly good, we wouldn't put it on the shelf, we would just toss it)... so that's good at least.

But it's totally wrong! How can you return something from years ago? How do you justify getting money back for milk that went bad when the carton said it was going to go bad! Also, if you go to Costco around this time of year, you will find people returning Bushes, shrubs, plants that they planted last year, didn't take care of-- the plants died and now they are exchanging them for brand new plants!! Can you say PATHETIC??

So, pretty disturbing!! But at least they are not putting the things back on the shelves (from what I've seen at least)... we can only hope!
