there's tons of restaurant on 46th b/w 8th and 9th. i dont have any italian recommendations but that's a good area to stroll around for options
but i agree with carmines - delicious! they also take reservations (i asked them once) so i highly recommend making them b/c it gets PACKED!

I recently discovered Simply Pasta. It's REALLY fun inside, the drinks are great, and the food is really really good.

Todd English Ca Va
310 W 44TH ST. NEW YORK, NY 10036
I took FH there and to see wicked for his bday last year. food was to die for!
eta: Havana central has yummy cuban food and it's a fun restaurant but can get loud in there from the music. There is an italian place across the street from it that was reallly good. FH and I went there one time when Havana seemed too rowdy and I forget the name but the food was reasonably priced for timesquare and really delicious!

Carmines if you want the cheesy italian restaurant chain feel - but the food is still really good there
I worked in Times Square for 5 years and my favorite italian restaurant is Osteria al Doge 142 West 44th Street New York, NY 10036 (212) 944-3643
