DH and I put another offer on a house in West Babylon--this time on 17th Street.... i previously posted about a house we thought we were going to get on 6th Street. This other house is sooo much bigger and we're getting a LOT more for the money.....
but i am getting so many mixed reviews. some people tell me west bablyon is great, and we like what we've seen so far... i mean, it's like most towns on LI. but people keep saying, 'It's ghetto' or ' I don't know about the school district.' 'my brother moved out of west babylon'.... we don't know what to think....
it's hard--- LI is so damn expensive and we can't afford the areas everyone keeps saying... like Merrick and Rockville Centre and Northport and Huntington or MIneola or Garden City. or the buy a 'starter home' crap... a starter home is still $350K!!!! I feel like people just don't understand... and that we're doing the best we can!!!!
What can you guys tell me about the area? Mainly: School District (West Babylon Schools) and overall area in terms of re-sale in the future, community, etc. etc. Where is the town going or where has it been?
Thanks!

First off, congrats! I responded to your last thread about WB. There are always going to be mixed reviews about different areas. WB is no Sands Point, but it's also not 'ghetto'. I graduated from WBHS and got such a great education. The school district is great. My godson is autistic and has just received AMAZING treatment and programs from the SD. My family lives on 14th street. 17th street is closer to Wyandanch, which isn't the best area to be around, but it's nothing you should be concerned about. There's also a lot more growth in the area recently. Feel free to FM if you have any specific questions. I can tell you exactly where to go and where to avoid. But again, congrats! I have my fingers crossed for you. 17th street is in a great neighborhood and I really think you'll enjoy it.

I agree. I live in Lindenhurst (the town right next door) and I have had a lot of friends from WB. Its a good town. As a teacher (I dont teach there but wouldnt mind working there) the schools are good too.
You are going to hear mixed reviews any where you go. I wouldnt worry about it.

thanks ladies! i feel much better. . . . i guess i was just frustrated. it's like whatever we try to do for ourselves is not good enough for everyone else and that's really annoying!!!! i know that's not what matters, but it does get frustrating.
we love the house and the area seems fine... and i am glad to hear that you all like the school district.... we don't have kids yet and we will... so we have to think about that... and school district is important when you try to sell. i'm a teacher... too bad the houses in the district i teach average $700K!!
