I found out today that my high school (which is actually pre-k to 12th grade), the Academy of St. Joseph in Brentwood is closing down at the end of this school year. The sisters who run the school have said they don't have the finances to keep it up and running. It is so sad because the school is so historic. It's been in existence for probably hundreds of years now. I also have so many wonderful memories there. The girls I went to school with were and some are still like sisters to me (there were only 44 in my graduating class). I also feel terrible for all the current students that are going to have to leave and the entire staff that will lose their jobs. I loved my teachers there.
There was a meeting held last night at the school with hundreds of people including teachers, parents, students, and alum (from what I heard). They tried to convince the sisters to keep the school running but they just didn't seem interested in anyone helping them. People were even offering to help continue to support them financially. But as the woman who told me about the school closing said, 'everyones' pleas to keep the school open fell on deaf ears.'
It's such a shame

BTW - Any other ASJ alum out there? How do you feel about this news?

Re: NWR: Sad day for ASJ
Class of 1999 here,
I am beyond upset at the news of the Academy closing its doors. That school is the very reason I am who I am today. My great Aunt was a Sister of St Joseph as well so I always felt an extra special connection to the school. Its a shame that more girls will not get to have the experiences we did and learn and flourish in such a nuturing school.
There are other ASJ grads on the board.
I love ASJ so much even to this day and wish that I could exist in Academy land! High school is a rough time but I loved being there.

Whoa! I went though only for a few months in my freshman year ('95) but I liked the school. It's a shame that it has to close.

aw. I used to go to a school a lot like that. It's a Private School (K-12) in Smithtown where my graduating class was also very small. Maybe 30 students? Needless to say, we were very close. We still have little 'reunions' every year, which is always interesting. I don't know what I'd do if I found out that it was closing down. Would break my heart.
